Amana washing machine LWA50AW, started leaking water about 2 months ago. Last week it started making a loud "whirring" noise in the spin cycle, it sounded like an airplane taking off. Didn't check into it until last week a couple of days ago.  Noticed water leaking from the area where the transmission shaft enters into the tub. I assuming that this is the main tub seal. The belt looked pretty bad too. I started to take it apart, but not sure of a couple of things.  I got 2 questions:

Was the loud noise I heard during spin likely the bearing? Or is it likely it could be the belt? Is it common that the bearing fails when there is a tub seal leak? I'm thinking maybe that the water leaked onto the bearing causing it to fail. If I remove the bearing is there a way to check it?

I removed the top lid, the agitator and the basket, and now I'm need to remove the 1 1/2" nut to get to the tub seal. How can I remove the nut? I tried to turn it with a wrench, but the whole shaft turns.

Thanks,

Howdo
