The lights (2 x 60W) stayed on and created so much heat that the plastic melted and created that horrible burning plastic smell and ruined the housing. A search on google revealed that this has happened to many and one said it caused a fire. Perhaps you can recommend where I can buy a replacement board. I tried the link here in the forum for parts and there are lots of boards that are close but not exact. Here is the PN: 6871JB1375. Mine has an E written at the end of it. Does anyone know if there is a newer version perhaps to address this specific problem? I think it is one of the Omron relays that is responsible for controlling the lights which has failed. The door switches test ok. Apparently the lights go out if a door is left open for longer than around 7 minutes so I think there must be a timer controlling the relay. I'd rather swap the board however if I can get one for a reasonable price. Thanks for taking the time to reply! Cheers!

call LG and complain. See if they will fix it on their dime. The board and light socket harness should be replaced. The new harness has a thermostat built in so if it sticks again when it gets hot it will cut voltage to the lights.

Thanks for the help. I'll try and get LG to cover it. Any chance you know of the part number for the new harness? It doesn't come up in repairclinic.com's inventory. I did find from the service manual LG's part number of 6621JK2002D for the original bulb sockets with harness. Also, the model ends with SB not SP. I read it wrong in the dark. I did this exact same fix a few months ago. Here are the part numbers from that job. 3550JJ1070B - Light Cover 3110JJ1014A - Light cover Bracket 3034JA1009A - Reflector Plate 6621JK2003B - Update Kit This was back in November, so I don't really remember what the "update" kit was, but I think it was the wire harness with the built in thermostat that denrayr mentioned.

This is my first time to this site. What a great resource!! Thank you all for taking the time and effort to provide this information, it has saved me a ton. I also have this light problem with my LG, and after reading through this wealth of information, I'm not surprised. The Omron spec sheet for this G5NB relay indicates that the "Max. switching power" rating for the contacts is 90W. LG is using these relay contacts to switch 120W worth of light bulbs. We may get better life out of the next relay by changing out the two 60W bulbs with 40W bulbs. I haven't tried it yet, but I should still be able to see the mold on that loaf of bread that's still in there. Thanks again for your help...

The spec sheet does indicate that the "Rated load" for the contacts is 5A @ 250V, which presumably means that, once the contacts are closed, a continuous current of 5A @ 250V can pass through them. The spec sheet does indicate that the "Max. switching power" is 90W, which presumably means that if a greater load is applied during the switching operation, the contacts will probably arc and weld closed or burn off.

what spec sheet are you referring to ? found it must be some other characteristics... says 1250VA 90W VA is basically watts... There is definitely something odd going on with this relay, because I have confirmed that the relay is the failure in my LG, as it appears to have been in multiple units indicated above; with the contacts being welded closed. The only load on this relay appears to be 120W (1A @ 120V) worth of light bulbs...

You can relax if you put in the new light socket harness with temp sensor at the same time you do the replay. Problem has not returned in all these months.

I had the same problem. Read this forum & wasn't sure about the part number for my model. Took denrayr's advice and tried LG first. I explained my problem and LG is fixing it parts & labor with no charge to me. Save your money for parts and let LG fix the problem, which is obviously a design flaw. Donate to the beer fund instead.

Please note that the light bulbs you install in the unit should be 40 watt appliance bulbs, not just every day 60w - Actual LG replacement bulbs have a blue tinted glass that gives the interior a "cooler" look

This only affects certain models of LG refrigerators built during a specific time frame. I've installed quite a few of these kits in refrigerators that were long out of warranty. LG NEVER declined a request for an extension of warranty coverage on this type of repair for *any* customer that needed it. The Main Board controls the lightbulb "on / off" function. The cause of this type of failure (dual light bulbs stayed on & melted lens) is a failed RELAY on the MAIN BOARD. The new MAIN BOARD has a much larger RELAY on it which is far less prone to becoming stuck in the "on" position. For additional redundancy---the new lightbulb assy has a temperature thermostat attached to it. In the unlikely event that the new Main Board Relay were to fail again, this thermostat will prevent overheating of the lightbulb housing assy.
