Grasshopper returns, begging assistance with naughty dishwasher. Yes, it is one of the recalled units and has had it's replacement. All was cool. All suggestions are welcomed with eternal gratitude!

In the center of your lower wash arm you have a round disc. This un-threads (pressure from the palm of your hand will usually do it). After that there will be a removable triangular piece, remove that. Your wash arm and wash arm plate will now lift off. After you remove your wash arm, the top of your motor is covered by your first filter. To remove this, remove the torx screws that hold it in place and remove the filter plate. There will be two white split rings that will probably pull off as well when you do this. The go on with the openings 180* apart. After the plate is removed, you will have access to your sump area. Clean out all the debris and clean the filter, 4 armed back wash arm and any other gunk you find. If you have to go beyond this point, the next piece is your discharge housing which is held on my torx screws as well. Removing this will give you access to your impeller asm. You will probably not have to go this far to find your culprit.

Okay, I took everything out (your instructions were right on). Cleaned the filter and four way arm. There was no obvious problem located other than a wad of gunk in the filter housing and lots of funky greasy buildup. At this point, with everything still out, I closed it up and started it again. The noise was still there. I then removed the discharge housing cover and located a black impeller with a disk laying on top. The disk appears warped. And, on the side against the impeller, the disk is worn and burned. It appears that it might have been attached to something at one point as it has a raised center hole. This time I replaced the housing cover without the disk and tada...no more noise! Hurrah! At the beginning, I located a piece (about like a piece of potato peel, but much tougher) that I now believe to be a piece of this disk. I suppose at this point I will be replacing something, but how much of this is now involved? I attempted to attach a picture, but it is too large. Sorry.

That makes two units with the discharge housing coming apart in the last 10 days or so. I have never had one fail prior. Last one was not a noise complaint, it was a poor wash-ability complaint. Link to that story below. http://applianceguru.com/forum1/15697.html

Thank you. The part came in today. I have a couple of follow-up questions. First - the old discharge housing had three holes in the plate. The new part has the spaces for the holes marked but, no holes. Should I drill these out? (very carefully) Second - I replaced the first filter (part #4 on the exploded view). The new filter only has three holes for the screws and six came out. Do I drill these holes also? Thank you in advance for your continued assistance.

there should be no drilling involved, possibly part #4 is the wrong part.

Below are the Maytag original part numbers. They will probably be on the box 99001789- Is Maytag filter part number. It did change from 6 holes to 3 a couple of years back. Stagger the screws in a 12, 7 & 5 O'clock pattern. If the indents are there but not drilled out, carefully drilling them out would be fine. 99002461- Is the Maytag part number for the discharge housing asm. I thought they eliminated the holes to gain more pressure from the water diverting around the plate. I would not drill them out and try it that way. Again, I have really not seen these fail so I have not really looked at one too closely. Usually take it off, set it aside and go on. The parts purchased are correct Maytag numbers and look exaclty like the pictures available on this site. I can only hope all of you will be pleased to know that I put everything back together without drilling anything out, and the blessed little machine is cleaning wonderfully! I continue to be impressed by the knowledge shared on this site. Everyone is so professional. Grasshopper bows to the Sublime Masters! Becky....just call me Beagle

Just to follow up on the previous listing you shared with me, our dishwasher is also 7 years old. Guess the discharge housing can handle only so many loads before it reaches it's stress failure point. Hopefully, others will be able to find their issue quickly with this now on the forum. Thanks again!
