My 6-year-old Jenn Air Refrigerator model JCD2389GES was not cooling and had ice on the freezer wall.

I turned it off and let it defrost for two days. I turned it back on and it was cooling and freezing so (from what I've learned), the self-defrosting system is a problem.

But I see the freezer wall on both sides of the evaporator housing is scorched and melted. So, I unplugged it and will have to get professional help or a new refigerator?

The defrost heater element Part 1025806 is touching the metal evaporator housing and the metal housing touches the freezer wall. This doesn't seem right. What do you think?

I can post pictures. I know this is more than I can confidently try to fix myself. But I'm hoping to have some information to tell a repairman or should I buy another refrigerator.

The heater should not get so hot to cause that damage. The limit switch should cut off the heater way before that time. Are you saying the heater is touching the wall on both sides, or on one. If the wall is not damaged really bad, it may not cause you any problems, but if the plastic is melted all the way through, it may be time to go shopping. I am interested in hearing from the experts on that model to find out how this could happen. I'm watching this.

The heater is touching the metal housing on one side. On the other side, the metal housing touches the refrigerator wall and it has the most damage. Here is a picture. It seems like the metal housing would not touch the element or the refrigerator walls if it was centered.

Holy crapacciolli, Batman! The only time I've ever seen that kind of damage is when the wrong replacement defrost heater was used or a bad wire connection. Has this refrigerator been "repaired" previously?

The heater on earlier models could become loose with the original style clip. They changed it for exactly the reason you see here. If it has not burnt through the wall yet and damaged the insulation, centering the element correctly should be sufficient. If it has burned through and damaged the insulation, it will have to be covered with liner repair tape and then aluminum foil tape. If it has caused severe damage, nothing will help and it will constantly frost and freeze over you supply and returns from frig to freezer side. If it has burnt through, check your warranty, I think it has a 20 year liner warranty. They will first try to fix it with the method I described, but if that does not work and it continues to cause frosting problems they will have to replace it or pro rate it.

The icemaker was repaired about 5 years ago but that's all. I never had any problems until a couple of weeks ago and I thought it wasn't cooling properly. I could not see this damage until I took the front plate off and after all the ice melted. I called jenn Air and they said it was out of warranty and I don't have an extended warranty. I will look at my book about the freezer wall warranty.

My 2-cents/vote is the bimetal is shorted and defrost is terminating on the timer alone. The burnt area appears to be where the evaporator cover touches the liner.

In 2001 the added a locate post on the evap to keep the heater from shifting, either from transporting it, or ice building up behind it due to a defrost failure and the ice forcing it out of place or a system failure doing the same thing. You could very well have a bad limiter allowing it to stay in defrost too long or you can have a bad defrost board that caused the unit to have an ice build up and force the heater out of it's normal position, then, because those boards are fickle, it did go into defrost and the combination of the limiter being encapsulated in ice, and the heater being out of position, led to the liner melting. Looking at the warranty book, it appears liner had a 5 year warranty on it.

I've seen the burning and cracking like that a few times on Maytag side X sides.
