We do things for friends and family and maybe get a bite to eat.

Friends bottom freezer : Fins a block of ice have thawed twice , every two weeks about. I have manually turn on defrost timer, no snap , crackel , pop. I put the ohm meter on heater element it registered about 30 if I remember right ( this was last week ). I also put the meter on the leads going to the element from ( I assume ) the defrost timer. The voltage was about ( if I remember correctly ) 220 , I maybe wrong I don't use a meter that often. That was about all I did besides thaw a block of ice.

what I want to know , if I am on the right trail , are the readings close, can the heating element be accurately check for a good or bad heating element and what type of readings should I see and don't take anything I have mention as accurate.

Thanks for any Info

James

The defrost terminator bimetal is in series withe the heater. If you read 220 it is probably 220 k-Ohms. There is a resistor connected parallel to the bimetal for testing purposes. If you read 220k through the bimetal and heater, the heater isn't open, but the bimetal is. If you read 30 Ohms through the loop , the bimetal is closed (as it should be in freezer temps) and the heater appears OK. If the loop reads open, it is more likely the heater that is broken, but could be a faulty terminator with broken resistor.

To me this seems like you have a bad defrtost terminator.

OK, we gotsta take the readings you report as being accurate because, well, we ain't got a choice! Since we're not there, tag, you're it. So, garbage in, garbage out. Here, this page may help you with your meter. Study up-- pop quiz in the morning. D'OH! I gave it away! OK, forget I said anything about a pop quiz. We'll just wait and see. Yeah, uh huh.

I will surely read and use as I can and I thank you. I must admit that I did a daring thing, I removed the defrost thermostat and jumped the wires with a 12 gage wire. I got heat enough to take the skin off anyone silly enough to grab the heating element , so the thermostat is a bad thing .

These last few days going on to weeks it seems , I have learned a lot at the expense of time about washers and refrigerators , this has been a schooling and I know that the friends of mine and family have no clue of the time and study that goes into finding and solving their problems . I hope they feed me and serve my desired beer.

Thanks and Happy 4th of July

James
