I have a one year old Whirlpool side by side with the touch pad dispensing system. The unit still is manufacturing ice, but it will not dispense. I did all the basic stuff, like remove the bin and empty it and checking the auger for freedom of movement. Still no ice. When I push on the pad, I hear a hum for about one second indicating the ice door opening. I don't hear a motor trying to turn or freewheeling due to stripped out gears or a broken shaft. Just a one second hum and the light does come one. Then I hear two relay clicks. The first one is associated with the light going out and then there is another one about two seconds later. About ten seconds after that, I hear another one second hum indicating the ice door is closing. The hex drive shaft has a little slop in it, but can't be rotated. That seems to rule out a broken shaft. Since I don't hear the moter running it could be either a pc board problem or the motor itself is shot. There was never any odor indicating the motor burned up. Or the motor could simply be so quiet and well insulated that I can't hear it. But that also seems unlikely since I put a dab of paint on the hex drive shaft and it has never moved. I did enter the service diagnostic mode and everything checks. So pc board or motor. I'm leaning towards pc board, since the unit failed suddenly and without any warning or unusual noises or burnt electrical smell. It appears the motor and pc board are accessed from the outside. Any special tricks I need to know on how to get in there? I see two screws when I pull out the tray. But I don't want to get started until I have a better idea of what comes next. And then I need a few tips on diagnostics. I have a VOM for checking voltages and resistance. Thanks to all who help me out here. I'll be a hero to the wife if I can fix this. She's the only one who ever uses ice. Attachment: IM000686.jpg (Downloaded 70 times) Last edited on Sun May 13th, 2007 11:43 pm by AlaskaErik |

Try taping down the switches on the door frame and then checking the motor with the door open to see if its turning. Maybe it busted its coupling. Last edited on Mon May 14th, 2007 02:32 am by That Guy |

Need the rest of the model number to see the revisions on this unit...did you check the auger motor? Sounds like it may be defective or frozen up, water might be getting past the seal and getting onto the motor, which one goes in your unit would depend on the revision numbers at the end of the model number. |

Not only can I not reach in your refrig and check the motor for you, your description indicates it could be anyone of a dozen different problems. Where to start? You might want to verify that the motor is or is not turning or that it does or does not have voltage to it. Then I or Pegi might be able to help you more. |

Thanks to the tech manual I have determined that the motor is shot. A new one has been ordered from the Repair Clinic. Way cheaper than the ones I could get locally and they have to order it anyway. Thanks again for the help. Erik Last edited on Wed May 16th, 2007 11:10 pm by AlaskaErik |

Cool, let us know if this is the proper diagnosis when you have it installed so others can benefit from this thread... |

Pegi wrote: Cool, let us know if this is the proper diagnosis when you have it installed so others can benefit from this thread... This is an update. I ordered the new motor from Repair Clinic, but it took them over three weeks to deliver it! But my diagnosis was correct. The ice dispenser is working perfectly now. Pegi, I really appreciate the tech manual. Without it, I would have had no idea of what values to look for on the old motor. Installation was a snap. I inserted the shaft and pushed it through the boot, and then I held it up out of the way with a pair of vice grips. I then installed the motor, but I didn't tighten the mounting screws. Next I pushed the shaft down into place and tighted everything up, connected the wiring and buttoned it all up. Piece of cake. Good thing most homeowners don't know how easy a lot of this stuff is or you pros would have to find another line of work! I hope this isn't a harbinger of things to come. I've always thought of Whirlpool as a pretty reliable brand. My old GE side by side I had before was still going strong after 15 years without ever having needed a single repair. Even the ice dispenser worked perfectly after 15 years. But I left it behind when I sold my old house last year. Anyway, thanks again for all the help everyone. Erik |

RepairClinic doesn't deliver anything, they package it and hand it over to the carrier you select (UPS, USPS, etc.). Maybe your complaint is with the US Postal Service for taking three weeks to deliver to Alaska! |

That's what we professionals call a "mistake." You need to let them know about the shipping problem, give 'em chance to make it right. |
