I am not new to troubleshooting problems. I work with cars all the time but never appliances. Fridge is almost 6 years old and it used every bit of the warranty before it expired. Extended warranty was a joke (maybe not?) but I promised my wife I could handle it. Well, loooks like I need a little help. Fridge quit out of the blue. Everything works, lights and both fans. Evap coils are dry and there was water in the tray when I found it dead. No click from the compressor. Not hot.... nothing. No voltage to the overload or start relay. Tested both wires with ground to fridge frame. Compressor Ohms test is good. I see a small capacitor and the board and have not tested either. I replaced relay and overload as they were cheap and easy to get. Ole shotgun approach. Blam! Miss! I want to get some advice before I proceed. Also, didn't test the defrost system as I figured it would be the board anyway? Any thoughts? Thanks in Advance! Ken

Not getting any hits on your exact model#. However we may still be able to help. Get out the wiring diagram (toe grill is the location). You said no power at the relay/overload, follow the wires on the diagram and check for power at the board(be sure all wires are properly connected so as not to get false readings). No power, new board!

Nice! thanks for the wiring diagram. I have never tested a board before? This is why I posted a I don't want to fry it by mistake. Could the run capacitor be the culprit? can these be tested with a ohm meter?

More problems. Seems the wiring diagram I was so excited about is incomplete. Individual diagrams are missing including the main control board. I have not tested appliances before. Can someone give me some guidance? I have a line voltage diagram coming into the board which gives me the AC circuit going to the compressor. This leads to Tab 1. Tab 2 is the defrost circuit and I see both of these on the actual board. Seems you could jump the board here and test it? Is this how I could proceed. Next question, Is there any common things in series (I'm a DC car guy) that could fail opening the circuit? Please help this hopeless grasshopper as special shipyard ale is warm.

Well, I figured it out by searching through the forum and tested the board between J7 and J8 or the black and orange wire. No voltage. There was voltage at at "line" but not between J7 and J8. Pulled the board and there was a black area behind the board. Looks like the board was grounding to the case? or just blew?? The board was fryed at a contact with a box on the other side that looks like some sort of inductor or switch for AC to DC? Says Comp by it with a K4. Looked burnt but I figured maybe it was grounding and so I kept it off the case and gave it juice. It really fried when I put voltage through it again. Hey,.. I'm a grasshopper! Could dirty coils or kids leaving the door open cause this to burn out or should I be looking for a problem elsewhere? Please help me. Did I offend with a poor beer choice or do you guys hate this POS I have?

Here is your motherboard schematic for checking everything my brokedown friend scroll down to the middle of the page....look down in the bottom left corner of schematic jump L1 to compressor terminal with board unplugged to test compressor http://applianceguru.com/view_topic.php?id=3075&forum_id=1&highlight=gss20iembww def. sounds as if you have a MB bad though....check the link Pegi posted as GE is doing alot of crazy things with the boards good luck... Thanks Pegi, Stump This box was purchased in 2001 and will be 6 years old this summer. It has had it's share of problems but the initial warranty was dirt cheap for the initial 5 years...like 60 bucks??? It paid for itself several times over. New extended from GE was a laughfer,....like 300 bucks a year. Now I see why. I have a ton of wrench turning with cars and the fridge was confusing and still is so maybe it's not a laugher. Really appreciate the help. I did look up the board and GE has changed the board quite a bit. Wonder if it is worth doing some research?

Good News and Bad News......Good news first and is she is running for 30 minutes so far with a new board. Thanks to everyone here!!! Thank you very much for your time and knowledge! Bad news is I found the board in town and had to get it. A week without a fridge was pushing my wife to the limit. I would have gladly purchased it here. Light at the end of the tunnel.....I'm sure I will be back with the dreaded "GSS". This shoud be a repair man's favorite??  Thanks again Ken

Gotta do what ya gotta do to keep the Mrs. happy....remember down the road though repair clinic has a unlimited return policy....your order it and that don't fix it return it....most other shops if you diagnose it and the part you buy doesn't fix it you own it after being hooked up......glad you got it going

Looks like I'm another one of GE's victims. The refrigerator does the following: 1 - ice dispenser and water dispenser do not work - light dims when dispenser activated 2 - refrigerator clicks and clicks for a while then finally kicks on 3 - sometimes refrigerators clicks and ice dispenser light flickers with relay clicking It was worth the donation to the fund to find the recall notice. Let's see how long it takes GE to fix the damn thing. Mercifully, I'm in a rental so that should be covered by the lease if they won't fix it under the recall. Of course, GE keeps the recall secret so we can't find out about it.

sounds like the dreaded mutha board....stay on them they need to be held responsible for building this thing...although I can't say alot it has made me quite a bit of money over the years

Ok, I've reviewed your list, mine does the exact thing-lights dim, but no dispensing of ice. My unit was mfg in Oct 05 so it falls within the mfg range but not the serial number. I'm assuming that means I'm going to have to pay for the fix. I'm pretty handy, if i got the part, do you think I could fix it myself?

Does anybody know if this recall includes Hotpoint refrigerators? I have a model HSM25GRF SA that has the same symptoms mentioned above. I unplugged it to reconnect the icemaker after redoing my plumbing, and it stopped cooling. I left it unplugged for several hours. It now cools, but does not get as cold as it used to. The water dispenser works sometimes, but when it does, the light and LED gets really dim. And the DC Fan in the freezer slows way down until about 30 seconds after you release the dispenser switch, Ice maker works, but since the freezer isn't as cold as it used to be, it doesn't make as much ice. And, the motor for the ice dispenser/crusher does nothing. No noise, no rotation, and the light and LEDs get dim when I try to use it. So, it sounds very similar to the issues mentioned with the GE recall.

OK, I have downloaded the pdf, and my model is covered by the recall. I am a bit confused about the serial number. Mine starts with TH, but is not a bottom mount freezer, it is a side by side. The range of serial numbers for side by side is nowhere near mine. Also, how do I get GE to cover this? The letter is dated 2006, does anybody know if this is still covered?
