The defrost heater comes on when the timer is in defrost mode. Samuari says replace the timer and the thermostat. The timer seems easy enough; pop off the control panel, pull out old timer pop in new. The thermostat is a little bit different because the old thermostat has a connector on it, the new thermostat has just bare wires on it. Do I try to remove the contacts of the connector and crimp the new thermostat to the contacts, or should I just cut the old wires and splice or solder the new thermostat to the old wires? How do I protect the splice from corosion? Thanks!

Sorry I should have referred to my previous post "Refrigerator Preventative Maintenance" on the 24th of April. Samuari's response was "Yes, fix the defrosting system". The link provided discusses two options both which indicate replacing of the defost thermostat. In my case, manually turning the defrost timer turns on the defost heater.

Sounds like the defrost timer was in fact bad and needed to be replaced. Since you already have the bi-metal also, and most of them come with bare wires, you can use butt connectors or wire nuts, whatever you like and then tape securily against moisture. Or better yet seal with some heat shrink.

Replaced only the defrost timer and all appears to be working okay. The outside temps this weekend were in the 90's with the relative humidity in the 90's as well. Airflow was still going from the freezer to the refrigerator - this with my 12 year old and her three cousins going in and out of the refrigerator all weekend. Thanks for the help.
