The water to the door dispenser and it appears the icemaker as well quit working. I've replaced the water filter and still no water or any sound of air trapped in the line. The water supply is on and working. The light on the door comes on when the water lever is depressed and the ice dispenser still works. I've tried the trouble shooting steps in the owners manual. Appreciate any help.

Start back at the water inlet valve in back. Identify the coil that serves the dispenser (follow the plastic tubing) and get your volt meter on it. Actuate the dispenser and see if you're getting 120vac at that valve coil. If so, and no water, then the valve is bad, replace it. http://www.repairclinic.com/referral.asp?R=154&P=69 If you're not getting voltage there, then there's a problem with the dispenser actuator or switch. Post your findings and we'll go from there.

I located the coil at the lower left in the rear, it has a blue side and a red side. I unplugged the leads and test the voltage, blue side 120 volts when water on door activated, red side no volts when activated but coil vibrated when water selected on door when reconnected. Bad news. Replaced the water inlet valve and still no water at the door. Checked the voltage on the blue side, 120 volts when selected, no water just a humming sound. Also checked water supply at the valve is good. Icemaker and dispenser still working fine.

I don't think the line would be frozen but I haven't checked. I'll take a look. What would casue the coil to vibrate? It is like it is trying to operate but can't.

Remove the line at the valve and see if it dumps water when the dispenser calls for water.

That would be the line on the blue side? I'll check it when I get home in the morning. If there is water on demand with the line disconnected what would be the next step?

Thaw that puppy out and put one of your servants on "dispense a glass of water every five minutes" duty. Or find out why the line froz'd up in the first place.

Some progress made. I separated the water line in the front before it goes up the door and operated the water dispenser, it worked so the valve is working. I've turned the freezer temp control down to 4 to see if that thaws the line if it is frozen. If the line is frozen why would it be a problem now since the unit is about 2 years old? What's next? Thanks

I would shut the unit off completely and try it every 1/2 hour until it dispenses. Hard to say why the line is freezing up now after 2 years of trouble-free operation, could be the insulation in the door is getting saturated.

All is well now. The line thawed out in a few hours after turning the temp control down to 1 of 9. Turned the temp control up to 5 and the freezer is holding 05 F and the water line still operating for the last week so it seems to be resolved. The problem may have been that the temp control was at 7 and we were gone on vacation for a little over 2 weeks and with no use of the freezer door or the water line caused it to freeze. I had already installed the new valve so I'll keep the old one in reserve, still cheaper than a service call. Thanks for the help and advice. Last edited on Fri Dec 22nd, 2006 02:58 pm by MC |

More problems with the door water line freezing. It has been freezing more frequently, turning the unit off for a few hours thaws the line. It used to freeze if we were gone for 4 or 5 days, now it is becoming more frequent. Any suggestions on where or how the line freezes. The temp in the freezer stays between 5 and 15 even if the thermostat is set at 2 of 9. This last time the line started flowing when the freezer compartment temp reached 30. Make sure the freezer door is sealing good at the bottom. If the gasket is letting a nice steady stream out the bottom it's aiming right at the hose as it angles up into the door. Over long periods with no usage it could gradually freeze it. Check that seal. Bruce

A common problem with these GE units. Come and get the Dispenser Heater Kit GE came up with to solve a poor design. I didn't think this would work but used it on my 4 year old GSL25 unit that was froze up for 2 months (and I fix stuff all day for other people) - mine was thawed out in less than 6 hours and works like a charm. It would be worth a call to GE to see if they will send one out for free. GE p/n WR49X10173 Also check out this post and a picture of the heater. It is the foil tape piece. I talked to GE today and they claim there is no history of freezing problems with this unit and will not provide any assistance other than scheduling a service call. I'll order the kit and be done with it. Thanks for posting the fix.
