Yes, that is a good way to determine if the venting is your problem or not. If you dryer works ok with vent disconnected, be sure to fix the problem (clean the vent out) and reattach vent hose. Don't run without the vent attached for any longer then just for testing purposes. You don't want all the moisture from the dryer in the house.
