the bottom of your stem seal seems to have a white ring around it where it should be black. It looks as though the carbon face has been worn right off.

That was the first thing I noticed about it when I got the new parts, other than the color though, the old and new seemed to be identical. That white ring seems to be made of teflon or something similar.

The parts are new and I got them from a guy on ebay that has an appliance parts store, but that was before I found this site. It'll be a couple/few days before I get the new seal.

OK, the parts were at the house when I got home last night so I put them in, reassembled, tested it and it's running perfect! I can't say for sure that the seal I had was a genuine Maytag part, but I know that the newest one is, and while the shape and size was identical and flexibility was not. The seal I had was much stiffer and harder and now that I've seen and installed a new on, I'm convinced that the one I had would have leaked no matter what. Well, just wanted to update and thank everyone for the help. I guess the main lesson I learned was that you get what you pay for with parts, but then again, if the job had gone smooth the first time, I might not have found this site and "met" some great people.
