I have a one year old Whirlpool side by side with the touch pad dispensing system. The unit still is manufacturing ice, but it will not dispense. I did all the basic stuff, like remove the bin and empty it and checking the auger for freedom of movement. Still no ice. When I push on the pad, I hear a hum for about one second indicating the ice door opening. I don't hear a motor trying to turn or freewheeling due to stripped out gears or a broken shaft. Just a one second hum and the light does come one. Then I hear two relay clicks. The first one is associated with the light going out and then there is another one about two seconds later. About ten seconds after that, I hear another one second hum indicating the ice door is closing. The hex drive shaft has a little slop in it, but can't be rotated. That seems to rule out a broken shaft. Since I don't hear the moter running it could be either a pc board problem or the motor itself is shot. There was never any odor indicating the motor burned up. Or the motor could simply be so quiet and well insulated that I can't hear it. But that also seems unlikely since I put a dab of paint on the hex drive shaft and it has never moved. I did enter the service diagnostic mode and everything checks. So pc board or motor. I'm leaning towards pc board, since the unit failed suddenly and without any warning or unusual noises or burnt electrical smell. It appears the motor and pc board are accessed from the outside. Any special tricks I need to know on how to get in there? I see two screws when I pull out the tray. But I don't want to get started until I have a better idea of what comes next. And then I need a few tips on diagnostics. I have a VOM for checking voltages and resistance. Thanks to all who help me out here. I'll be a hero to the wife if I can fix this. She's the only one who ever uses ice. Attachment: IM000686.jpg (Downloaded 70 times) Last edited on Sun May 13th, 2007 11:43 pm by AlaskaErik |
