 Flakes, huh? Well worth $65 for such an amazing work of fiction. Sounds like you got a tech who was too lazy to go back out to the truck to get a couple Bullets/A-1's and his r12 gauge set and see what was really going on. If there truly is a blockage in the ref system it can be solved by replacing the comp, evap and heat exchanger, a big job.

As to your amputation strategy, I can't see how the job could possibly be done neatly. The freezer comp and condenser are located on top of the ref.
