The lower impeller in bolted directly on a plastic shaft to the motor, isn't it? I've had occasions where a piece o' glass will jam the impeller, and when the motor starts, breaks the shaft. The impeller will just spin freely, or not at all when the motor runs...thus no water pressure and no water circulating.
