 I fought with this for an hour fearing that I would break it. 

Finally, I took a sharp knife and removed the small ridge on the large handle tabs and on the latch.  After removing just a slight amount of plastic, inserting the small tabs first and using a clamp to hold the latch, I gave it a very firm constant push and finally.......
