That got it.

That piece on the Whirlpool-branded washer you mentioned is purely decorative. Removal of the top panel on your washer proceeds in exactly the same manner, sans decorative trim piece. The top panel is fastened to the front panel by two clips (item 21). HINT: use a putty knife.
