I took the easy way out...I removed the whole assembly from the machine and took it to the Maytag repairman to ask for his help. The guy spent 20 minutes working on it. Seeing it operate properly helped me understand how it worked, but the old broken handle fell out when I removed the door screws, plus it was really broken (several places, deep cracks) so I never saw how it SHOULD work.
I had written on the side of the assembly "White Wires" and "Black Wires" so it was easy to hook the switches back up correctly and install it in the dishwasher.
