 YOu do need to make sure that the small spring-loaded plastic piece is in the right position before putting it back together.

(I know this because I did just what you did--took the whole damn thing apart--before reading this board. Just about jumped out of my skin when the big spring was released and went flying into the air just next to my head. I wasn't expecting that...)
