Update: With the next load, it's back to the drawing board. Did not start agitating. I opened lid, moved agitator slightly, then closed lid and agitation began. I don't know how these things work, but if I were guessing, it's some sort of slippage (belt or otherwise), but don't have any smell to substantiate it. Thanks for all your input so far.
