Can you get some pictures of the ice and water you're describing and post them online? You can upload them to a free image hosting service and then post the links here so that we can see the photos. One easy experiment you can try is to simply cut off the water to the icemaker. This would be most reliably done at the saddle tap valve that supplies water to the refrigerator. But you could also just turn off the ice maker if yours has an on-off switch.
