Actually, if the machine is in the state I believe it to be, it's going to be nearly impossible to get the spanner nut off!!!!!!

If you still have the transmission out, the the brake is completely loose and nothing to keep the basket from turning when trying to remove spanner nut.

If spanner nut needs to be removed it must be done first before tearing rest of machine down.

You also may not be able to even get the transmission to go back up into place because of the allen set screw you removed from the brake hub.   If the hub moved down the shaft when you loosened the screw then you tightened it back up in the wrong spot the transmission will try to compress the brake hub then bind up and not go all the way up into position.
