 I feel your pain.  We just bought a new Kitchenaid, a middle of the line with hidden controls.  It did not clean any better than our five year old Kenmore.  In fact it was nearly the identical machine with both units being made by Whirlpool.

We returned it after one day and bought a Bosch for 20% off. That made the price a little more acceptable. 

One thought on cleaning.  We have used Cascade for years, but I do not think it does a great job in the relatively hard water we have here in Colorado.  I will be searching for a different brand of detergent in the near future.

Hope your dishwasher woes get worked out to your satisfaction.
