Great masters I humbly offer up thanks and hope the great joy I feel is not premature in it's fruition. With the aid of this forum I believe I have successfully repaired my dead microwave of just under 4 years of age. I say believe because I just ordered the part from repairclinic.com - the "mgmt thermostat" that is behind the control panel and appears to ensure the magnetron and internal control area do not become too hot. I know I cannot truly boast to have defeated my microwave until I use it to reheat my first leftovers or frozen meal. I have determined that this thermostat is open (no continuity) and by jumpering across the connectors normally attached to the thermostat the microwave did indeed show signs of life and ask me what time it was so hope I am not too presumptuous in my hope of victory. I assumed at first it was a dead fuse as is suspected and described in this thread - http://applianceguru.com/forum1/11715.html - but removing and testing the fuse quickly showed this not to be the case. While through my research I gained fear and respect for the high voltages contained in the capacitor in my microwave the wiring diagrams and troubleshooting guide tucked behind the control panel and the similar information found on this site provided me enough courage to check the voltage across the power connection pins on the control board which showed no voltage getting to the board. Then a quick check of the two thermostats showed me that the control thermostat was indeed bad thus my current hopeful state awaiting a new thermostat for about $20 including shipping (after spending a few bucks buying a new multimeter as I had destroyed my previous one in unwise probing
). That said - as a most neophyte grasshopper is there anything I should know or fear that I might be missing in my newfound joy? Do I need to be overly concerned about what may have caused the failure of the thermostat? Having disassembled the outer case on my microwave is there anyting I need to know or be careful of in putting this device back into service should the new thermostat again return it to useful life?
While I have obtained my posting privileges by passing the merit exam I will most definitely be ponying up for the membership as this site has likely saved me much in the repair of my appliance as well as given me much pride should I indeed manage to repair something that was assembled in this disposable age in which we live.
