Thanks, that's a very interesting idea! I'm not yet quite sure how I might record the sound and upload it however...I'll give it some thought, but further suggestions would be most welcome.

Meantime, I will certainly see if I can narrow down the origin of the sound by removing the kick plate. I have now established that the sound definitely occurs twice in each cycle, and it doesn't happen exactly at the time of water intake after all, but just a little time after that.
