 better late than never.

yes, something else could cause this prob in this machine and its not a sock.  the plastic tube which delivers bleach and/or fabric softener to the tub can (and did!) break off and lodge itself between the basket and the outer tub. this apparently caused the clutch to slip over a period of time and eventually wear enough so the basket would not spin.

i removed the broken bit, and did willie's  #8 washer trick in each spring cup, cleaned and reassembled.

three weeks later, still running like new.
