 Affresh tablets work great on the front loaders.  It even helps clean up the "Gack" that builds up on the boots.  They tell you not to have clothes in the unit, but I have had better success by putting in rags and things I did not care got damaged.  That way in spin, centrifugal force will forces the water out of the clothes and spray the complete tub aiding in the cleaning process.
