 The pictorials spacing is a little exaggerated on the bag and manual, but you should not be rubbing.  You followed the picture on the bag I assume and it is an original part?  Also, belt goes smooth side down against the drum surface, not groove side like the rest of the world does.  Attached is the service manual with some additional photos.
