Hello Samurai forum,

I consider myself lucky that my 1998 GE washer and dryer have gone 8 years without needing major service.  A few months back, I replaced a leaky tranny on the washer thanks to this forum's help.  Now it appears that the dryer wants some attention.

First, its a GE DWXR473GT5WW gas dryer.  Recently, a fairly sizeable "thumping" noise occurs while the machine is running.  It is intermittent and sends a pretty good jolt into the floor that you can feel in the next room.  I know these new-style machines are known for wearing out their rear drum bearing and front drum slides.  The belt has never been replaced but has always been in decent condition when I've checked it every year or so.

So is the thumping noise a common problem as one or more of these parts wear out? Is it good practice to go in and replace the rear bearing, belt, and slides and just be done with it?  Is there anything else I should check for (worn idler pulley)?

Many thanks!

lindguini, not exactly sure which ge this is, but if it's the one with three screws in the back of the drum, try tightening them.I've seen these loosen up and make an awful thumping sound.

I've also seen the bands around the drum loosen up and cause an intermittant thumping. Unplug it, open up the top and roll the drum around by hand.
