One final check before I order a replacement motor - If the front panel is making whirring and clicking sounds but the motor isn't turning does that suggest that I need to replace the motor?

Our dryer stopped running last week and would simply hum when turned on.  The drum wouldn't turn without a great deal of effort.  Using your excellent site I removed the front panel and the drum.  I can now turn the blower fairly easily from the front so I was thinking that something had been caught but has now come loose.  Reattaching the front panel's electrical connections and turning the on knob only results in clicking from the front panel and no sound or activity from the motor at all.  Has my dismantling the dryer tripped some switch that has deactivated the motor or has it just given up.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.  The drum is sitting in the middle of the kitchen and I just found my kid having a great time sitting on the inside.

Thanks!

Any thoughts or suggestions?  I'd hate to drop a grand if I've already fixed the problem.

Thanks!

Hi Applianceman,

The glides look pretty good.  There aren't any gouges and they are nice and slick.  We didn't have an squeeking or shreiking before it stopped running.

Thanks

you could try oiling the motor

I've oiled the dryer motor and it now manually spins quite well.  Still no motor response (no humming; no spinning) when I turn the start switch though I do get clicking and whirring from the front panel.

Could it be some kind of fuse or switch that is turned off (Thermal Limit Switch?)?  Some of the other sites also reference a motor start capacitor but I haven't been able to figure out where and what that is.  The model of the dryer is FSE747GES1.

I'm still hoping to avoid replacing the motor since the discussions of motor replacements and sawing through the motor's crank are probably beyond my ability.

I've bought a multimeter and am planning on delving into motor testing next, so any thoughts along those lines would be welcome as well.

Thanks!

If the motor is not trying to start and the humming is from the console might want to trace back to see where you have lost voltage to the motor.....

This will show you the breakdown of your dryer on the right column, go thru here to see what all is in the dryer, the left column will give you a description of the part reference numbers..

your fuse on that dryer is located on the inside rear of the dryer ,its a small round black thingy with two wires going to it , if it is is not reading continuity(open) then it is bad.
