I am at my wits end. This washer is killing me. My clothes keep getting badly tangled around the agitator. This causes the load to become un even, then comes the violent shaking. I have made sure that everything is level. I made sure that it is agitating and not just spining in one direction. everything seems good, but it is oh so wrong.
Seriously, fighting to get clothes out for like 10 minutes. The loads are not too full.
Please help me.

Nope. It seems to just go back and forth.

I checked it empty it worked fine.
My wife got impatient and started a load and it seems it only spins in one direction (counter clockwise) when a load is in. It also makes a wierd wratcheting type noise.

We have seen the direct drive washers spin at speeds way above what is normal, something inside the transmission breaks which lets the washer spin so fast I think they are going to take off into orbit, can you tell if it is doing this?  does it seem to spin several times faster than it used to???  Other than spinning and agitating at the same time and spinning too fast I cannot come up with anything else at this time...

Correction, I just cought what was not catching my attention and went back and re-read what I thought I was seeing, and went and checked my DD washer, top load, and it spins clockwise, not counter clockwise....you wrote.. ""it only spins in one direction (counter clockwise)""  I am assuming this is a top load washer, I did not check the breakdown, if I am wrong please advise...

It's actually during the wash cycle that it spins in one direction instead of agitating back and forth, so while the clothes are being washed, they get knotted up, it doesn't run any faster than usual.

You are saying it is spinning counter clockwise in the hand wash cycle with it should be agitating??  The washer should spin clockwise, at least mine does, but not in the agitate cycle..either direction/

It sounds like maybe everyone needs to get on the same page here.

When you made this statement, "It's actually during the wash cycle that it spins in one direction instead of agitating back and forth, so while the clothes are being washed, they get knotted up, it doesn't run any faster than usual."

When you say, "it spins in one direction instead of agitating back and forth", I would have to assume you mean the agitator is only turning in one direction, And I believe Pegi is understanding you saying the spin basket is turning in only one direction while it is agitating.

That is most likely not totally true, the top half of the agitator does only go in one direction but the bottom part goes both directions.

Now is what we need to know, Is the basket trying to turn while the machine is agitating. If so then you would have to have a brake problem, (which you don't really see that often in these machines).

The racheting noise you hear is the dogs in the clothes mover agitator doing what they are suppose to do, (make the top half of the agitator only turn in one direction to suck the clothes on top back down to the bottom).

I came across one of those machines with that problem of tangle the cloths, seems  it would wash  and rinse ok, but when it went into spin cycle, it would spin out AND agitate. weirdest thang I ever seen on one of those I changed the transmission and fixed the problem
