Hell no, that is special heater wire, replace the element and save your dryer from a melt down!

If there is a ball at the end something shorted it out.  You can twist the ends together for a temp fix, might last a day, week.....will break at that point fast since it will get hotter at your splice. ....make sure none of the element is touching anything metal.  What is the brand and model number of this dryer??

The dreaded DOTT dryer, one of the worse designed dryers out there, something got against the coil like a pin or something probably....here is a LINK to the element from this site....DOTT= Dryer of Tomorrow Today....I think they should have waited a few years and designed it better...:?

This is a Whirlpool dryer, WP appliances are usually one of the best on the market, Sears makes nothing....however the dryers with the lint filter on the top are much better, there has been too many problems with this style is all...as you are finding out...
