I have a Maytag Performa dryer that stopped tumbling this evening 1) Is this just a belt from the sound of it? If not, any guesses? 2) How difficult would it be for an unotherwise mechanically inept husband (or me, probably!) to fix?

Yes sounds like a broken belt, post the model number so we can see what is inside of your dryer. Click on this link to read how the belt goes on Maytag dryers.

Welcome, the links should get you going in the right direction. Check the blower wheel while in there, they do round out.

Thank you for your help. We got the dryer open and it is so very definately the belt. It was shredded. It appears that the belt started slipping some time ago and got caught on a bolt on the drum. We are headed to a supply store tomorrow to get the parts. I'm glad it happened, there was quite a bit of lint trapped where we never knew to look! I am a bit concerned because the idler wheel and motor are behind the drum & also the blower wheel, so if anyone has any suggestions on how to take care of restringing the belt considering the tight spot, I'd appreciate it! I did want to mention that the Maytag Performa is more like the Norge dryers , pictured on this sitefor disassembly purposes, in case anyone else is lurking. Thank you Thank you for empowering us to tackle this on our own. Here's to getting the job done!

I did want to mention that the Maytag Performa is more like the Norge dryers , pictured on this sitefor disassembly purposes, in case anyone else is lurking. Great observasion Grasshopper, That Maytag Performa is a Norge dryer. Maytag now owns Norge. And getting that belt on is kind of a blind one handed operations. Stick right hand in, put belt around motor pulley then grab idler pulley and pull back while using thumb to hook belt around pulley.

Alrighty gurus, I got the belt, I seem to have it on the motor and pully the right way, however when the drum spins the belt seems to move forward about 1/2 inch so that it is riding along a bolt in the drum, what is causing it!!! HELP!

Hard to tell without seeing what you have done. Are you sure you got the belt on the motor pulley. If you somehow got the belt around the motor shaft instead of the actual pulley it very well could be the problem.

If where I am pointing to is the motor pulley, then I got it right. It is resting where the grooves would make contact with the "pulley" Actually the belt had left a mark on the drum before it snapped and that is where it seems to want to rest. It shimmy's out of the "V" on the drum forward about a half an inch! If I can get a picture of it I will! Attachment: motor.GIF (Downloaded 171 times)

Here is a couple of pictures of my dryer. This is a view of the top of the dryer. Note the belts position on the drum between the "V" and the bolt. Under the belt is a black mark the old belt left. For some reason this is where the belt wants to sit....any suggestions? Attachment: drum2.jpg (Downloaded 166 times)

This is the best picture I can get of the pulley and motor with belt strung. The camera is in the back of the dryer facing toward to front. Very difficult to get, my arm is a bit scratched up after of this? Thanks for looking and making suggestions! Kim Attachment: back2.jpg (Downloaded 169 times)

Good pictures. The belt is not supposed to ride in that drum groove-- they put that there to confuse grasshoppers and give appliance techs job security. The fact that the new belt is riding over the black smudges left by the old belt means that it is positioned where it's supposed to be. What's the problem here?

I'm back! My dryer, previously seen here: http://applianceguru.com/view_topic.php?id=2229&forum_id=2&highlight=performa is a Maytag Performa (PYE2300AYW = Model Number). It won't start. I initially hoped it was the outlet, but the outlet has power. What else should I check? and/or will I be able to handle this crisis or will I need to call in the troops?! The belt was working great!!

If you lift the top of the unit up there is a thermal fuse mounted on the heater assembly housing. Do you have a volt/ohm meter?? The fuse is a normally closed circuit when functioning correctly.

The thermal fuse has continuity when the back switch is pressed manually with the dryer unplugged. What's it mean? For some reason, the electrician doesn't want to try this manuver with the power connected!! I bow to your samurai power and wisdom....

The thermal fuse when good should have continuity always. You lost me with the whole back switch thing. What switch? What were the colors on the component you checked so we can be sure it was the thermal fuse and not the hi limit.
