My GE Dryer has a loud noise coming from it.  At first I thought that the noise was coming from the drum but when I opened it up it the sound was running at too fast of a pitch to be coming from the drum.

The belt seem fine, the Teflon guides that the drum runs on seem OK and if I had to guess it is a bad idler pulley but looking at the system it appears that the belt idler is nothing but a plastic pulley.  The pulley appears to be fine.

I haven't tried to pull the drum because the dryer is in a difficult location and it will be a pain to reinstall the belt if I have to get behind the dryer.  The problem is, I am starting to think that the motor is the issue and if my guess is correct, I wonder if the dryer is worth fixing or if I should just run it until it dies.

Anyone out there have experience with these that could advise me what to do next?

If the motor is toast, is it practical to consider replacing it or is the cost so much that it is not work fixing.

Bob

inspect the blower fan on the motor, make sure there are no dryer sheets in it, that it is not loose, and clean every vane, if link buildup comes off just some vanes the fan runs out of balance and can be noisey

There aren't any dryer sheets in there and  I would ask how in the heck they would get in there but I assume you have seen it before.

There was a lot of build up going into the fan but I didn't think there was much on the vanes but since i was not really looking at the vanes for buildup... well I guess I have to take a second look.

Thanks
Bob

What kind of sound was it? Squeaking or a metal buzzing, vibration sound that comes and goes?

It is a constant loud droning noise.  Too deep of a note to be considered a squeal.

More like the sound a bad wheel bearing makes on a car when you drive at a steady speed.

It causes a steady vibration to resonate through the dryer.

I can not duplicate the nose when I turn the drum by hand so this is why I have come to the conclusion that it is the motor...  I haven't had time to check the fan vanes yet.
