When you state hums, does it hum for a few seconds and then go quite for a while and try to restart doing the same thing? Or is the motor running, and nothing happening the entire wash cycle??

You have a bad transmission...sounds like ur mom gave you a lemon. Not worth the time or money to repair.....time to go shopping.

it may be a bad Timer or Speed Switch, but some electrical tests would need to be done .. here's a thought http://applianceguru.com/forum9/28432.html MAVT754EWW Wiring Diagram ![]()

did this washer work before it was given to you? if so its possible the motor was set out of place during transport, or its not installed correctly, the belt is under the washer near the floor, an obstruction under the washer can cause the motor to jam and not allow the belt to tighten for proper agitation

"by the sound of it it is trying to agitate but cant. I moved the agitator just a little and it did try to slowly move back and forth" If it is trying, and moved slowly back and forth and did not kick your overload off you either have a bad trans and appl.tech pointed out or possibly a belt that is too loose from the motor not pivoting back. If you tilt the unit back, you will see your belt. If you remove it and turn the pulley in the center, it should be easy to turn in both directions, but the agitate should be easier. If it is hard, the trans is binding. If it is easy to turn in both directions, then your motor might not be pivoting back all the way. Remove your front panel and see if the motor is pivoting smoothly back and forth. If it is not, a light sheen of grease applied to the metal plate will allow it to pivot easy and put the proper tension needed to drive the pulley to provide the correct agitation speed.
