I have an LG Tromm DLG9588SM gas dryer and the drum will not engage or spin. All lights and displays are normal. I can make all cycle selections as normal and when I press the start button all I hear is a light thump or click and nothing happens. Could this be a broken belt or is this a direct drive unit? Any suggestions?

Any suggestions? Two possiblities come to mind... 1) Clothing or other debris caught in the blower wheel housing 2) Depending on the SERIAL NUMBER---a crack in the drum at the edge

If you can spin the drum by hand it ( or the blower ) is not jammed. It it spins very easily more than likley the belt is broken. If the belt breaks it will not allow the motor to start nor the ignitor / flame to lite. The best way to know is to remove the top and check the belt. If the belt is in place and tight it is good. If the drum will not turn manually as john63 stated it may have something in the blower wheel. That or the motor is locked up. Remove the front panel to access the blower.

Thank you. Yes, I can spin the drum by hand very easily. Just to confirm, I have to access the belt from the top and not the back?

Ok...I removed the top and the belt seems to be nice and tight around the center of the drum and it spins freely. What would be the next possibility? Thanks.

You'll need a *service manual* to assist with: 1) Removing the *control panel* 2) Removing the *front cover* of the dryer 3) Removing the *blower housing* cover to inspect the blower for debris such as a sock.

I've already removed the control panel and top. When I tested and listened for the noise the top was still on the mahine. I pressed my ear against the side of the machine and pressed the start button. It kind of sounded like an electronic click, like a solenoid or similar that was trying to start the motor. The drum didn't move at all. Would the next step be removing the front cover and blower housing to look for something stuck in the blower? Our could the problem be electronic?

Ok...I removed the front cover and blower housing. The blower wheel was free of any obstruction and I could turn the wheel freely which also caused the drum to turn. What is the next suggestion or step? Thanks for the help.

The next item to examine---should be the DRUM. Looking at the drum from the top---rotate it by hand until a *seam* is noticeable. This is where the drum was welded. Check the edge of this seam on both ends of the drum for a stress fracture (ripped metal). If the drum is fine---re-assemble the dryer except for the top cover.

john63...I inspected the drum and drum seam and found no cracks. The dryer is about 4 years old. RegUS_PatOff...I have not tried to turn the motor shaft. I have turned both the drum and blower wheel. The belt is tight. Can I not assume if the belt is in place and I can turn the drum that it would mean the motor shaft is also turning? If not, do I access the motor shaft from the rear?

Ok..I have some symptoms that my wife just informed me of. Before the dryer stopped working, she said it would continue to run after the drying cycle was finished. After the dying time was finished the heat would shut off but the drum and air would continue indefinitely. She could open the door and it would shut off and when she closed the door it start up again. Don't know if this is related to the current problem but may point to an electronic problem vs. a mechanical problem. Any ideas? Thanks again for any help.

At this point it appears likely that the MAIN BOARD has failed. Cannot access LG website yet---I installed a new modem / monitor & still getting it together... Should have more info tomorrow.

I agree that the main board is bad. Even if you had another fault, say with the motor, which I doubt, the erratic behaviour of the program shows that the main board has to be changed regardless. The part number is 6871EL1019B.
