Greetings,

My washer started to make a loud chattering noise this week during the spin cycle only. Everything else seems to be working properly. I tilted the washer up and took off the belt to inspect it, it seems to be ok. All the pulleys seem to spin freely, the transmission one has resistance turning it counterclockwise if that means anything.

I took of the dust cap & there seems to be about 1/2 a teaspoon of oil in it. I came to this forum and did some searching to get an idea or what to do next. Is there a way to narrow this done to a thrust bearing or the oil seal needs to be replaced?

I uploaded a quick video of the chattering sound if its of any help.

My washer was purchased April of 2001 so I understand the transmission is still under the 10 year warranty? I wouldn't mind having a repair done if the labor won't be too much considering the age of the washer. Or if Maytag supplies me the parts I wouldn't mind doing the repair if I don't need too many special tools.

I'll keep reading up on this forum for similar problems but if someone knows what my washers problem is & my next step I would be most appreciative.

its hard to tell from the video, but it almost sounds like the pump is bad. the pump has a metal sleeve pressed into the pulley to hold it on. this sleeve works its way loose and rubs against the metal base of the pump. inspect between the pulley and base of the pump to see if this is the case. if the sleeve is loose the only way to repair it is to replace the pump.

Thanks for the reply. I reassembled the washer and ran a load of clothes through & now its not making the noise anymore, weird.

I did notice that if i open the lid during the spin cycle, the washer just spins down slowly, as if the brake is not engaging. Is this a problem other than a safety isssue?

Not braking isn't a huge thing. I'm curious why though. If you lean it back and spin trans pulley from below I think it should spin freely one way and quickly engage the brake the other.

The washer started making the chattering noise again. Your initial suggestion was spot on. I took off the belt and the drain pump pulley's sleeve is rubbing against the base causing the noise.

I'm going to order a new pump on Monday and also a thrust bearing kit as I've had that suggested as a probable reason for the braking issue. Its pretty cheap so will change it out to see if it solves that.
