Hello,

I have a Maytag SDE515DAYW Electric Dryer we bought just over 5 years ago and its been working flawless until a few days ago.

It had finished drying a load (it was dry, but we weren't 'there' when it finished), and when we went to turn it on for the next load it didn't start, push the button and nothing at all happens.

The internal light came on when we opened the door, but I still checked the breakers and they were fine.

I also checked the door switch and its fine.

I tried a 'tumble start' where I held the power down and my husband held the door switch and manually turned the drum until it 'started'. However, all we got was a humming noise like the motor was on but nothing was turning or anything.

Is this something that a blown thermal fuse could cause? I can't imagine both the power switch and motor mechanism broke at the same time, and really have no way of knowing what I should be troubleshooting but I suspect maybe the thermal assembly based on this bulletin - http://www.servicematters.com/maytag_library/docs/TDL-0072-B.pdf ). Could my dryer symptoms be consistent with a thermal assembly problem?

At this point I'm just not sure where I should start, and figure you experts would have the best advice for me. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

He took off the bottom section and the belt seemed fine, sturdy and around what it's supposed to be around.

when you try to start it, is it the Motor that is humming ?

Well I think it's the blower? The bottom was off and when i got it humming I could hear the blower part (sounded like small rocks being tumbled around for a few seconds) then just the blower portion. Does that sound right? I couldn't quite see if the motor itself was turning, but the belt/tumbler wasn't.

Ya I was just about to respond again, I read that one side turns the drum and the other does the blower, so I suppose the motor is working at least in the blower aspect.

So if the blower is working the belt should be as well?

I can try to disassemble it to have a closer look at the belt but it looks fine from the front.

Is there any relation to the power button not working though? It just seems like there has to be something that affects both the inability to start it up, and the lack of the drum spinning. But I really have no idea which is why I'm here.

If the Blower is running, the Motor is running.

Whether the Belt is slipping or not has to be determined..

Ok we got it disassembled. The belt was around everything like it was supposed to be, and when I turned the motor it turned the belt. I can only assume that the belt must be slipping since the blower was working however I can't see how I'm supposed to test for slipping or anything since it's all off at this point.

Also, any ideas on the reason the button starter stopped working, I just can't ditch the feeling that something here is related.

So I've uploaded some photos and perhaps someone can tell me if something looks 'off'.

I appreciate the replies so far, I hope I can get somewhere with this.

Also, I can easily take any photos requested, and thanks for the help.

Spin the drum rollers and belt tensioner pulley by hand. Should spin free. If any are stiff, replace all thee as a set.

The Start Button only starts the Motor, if it doesn't get up to speed (bad Drum Rollers, ect)
by the time you release the Button, it won't continue.

The start button doesn't start anything at all, push it and it does nothing.

The only way I got the motor humming was by manually turning the drum while holding down the start button and the door latch tab.

I can spin the rollers/belt/tension quite easily, just a hair stiff.

Bypass the start switch and see if the motor will run. You will need to have the door switch wires connected and the door shut or the door switch bypassed. Have the timer in the off postion, plug the dryer back in and when you turn the timer does the motor run? If it does don't let it run very long.

It doesn'y make any sense that it was working perfect one minute, then the next minute it won't start at all, and once I force it to start the drum doesn't turn. And with all the reading I've done, it seems every dryer does something different if the thermal assembly or fuse breaks.

If you were in my position, what would you do next?

If it stopped working, you may have dislogged a wire on the Motor ..

Ok I had a look at every wire and there's nothing even remotely loose or disconnected - all on very securely (except for the ones I disconnected in disassembling the machine)
