I found my problem's answer in the following old post but did not want to ask my question there as that thread is 5 years old!  http://fixitnow.com/2005/03/black-smudges-left-on-clothes-after.htm

So here goes.  The dryer is an Amana  Model ALG331RAW.  Serial S0108143266.  Several years old.  It has recently been sounding like it is full of gravel and tennis shoes.  Now it is making the irregular black marks on laundry.  Looking inside it is messy much like the Whirlpool pictured in that old thread.  My question is this:

Is there a kit to fix this Amana like there was a kit for that Whirlpool?  Or do I need to somehow find the parts separately? I am thinking I need just the two rollers and should replace the belt at the same time.  What is the idler pulley?  Anything else?  Is this something an average do it your selfer can do or should I get a service tech?

I have already in the past year replaced (myself) the cycling thermostat, the gas valve coils, and the timer.  How do I decide when the cost of continued repairs on this one makes buying a new dryer a better choice?  Or is that last question an impossible one? ;-)

Thanks!

Easy to service, remove Item #'s 15,9 14...Remove the 4 screws and the bulkhead (not pictured)...release the belt and remove the drum. Inspect the (2) front bulkhead glides as well (what the front of the tub sits on). Possible parts you may need linked below (except glides).

Thanks - That is a great help. How will the rollers be retained on the shafts? I guess the idler pulley also? Are there snap rings? http://www.repairclinic.com/SSPartDetail.aspx?s=t-ALG331RAW-%3d%3di1000&PartID=1000

I took the dryer apart today and am about to order the parts.  It came apart easily except for the "release the belt" part.  I ended up just working the belt off the rear of the drum.  I could see that releasing it from the idler pulley first might have made it easier, but I could not get my big hand down there with the drum still in place.  When re-assembling with a new belt are there any tricks or order to the procedure to make it easier?

I posted photos of the rollers, front glides, (now they were nuked), and idler pulley here for anyone to view:  http://amanadryer.shutterfly.com/22

How do I know if the roller shafts are still good?  The right side roller spins pretty freely, but the left side is a bit sticky.  Is that an indicator of a bad shaft, or just a bad roller?

The idler pulley has a snap ring also but it seems to be smaller than the ones on the drum rollers and the photo of the pulley does not seem to indicate it comes with a snap ring.  The only snap ring I find in the parts list is the one indicated above for the rollers.  What do I do about the snap ring on the idler pulley?  Or is it the same size as the roller snap rings and my eyes are fooling me?

Are these the front drum support. guides?  http://www.repairclinic.com/SSPartDetail.aspx?s=t-ALG331RAW-%3d%3dd602193i997951&PartID=997951
That looks like the metal bracket, but mine looks like the metal brackets are still good and something else is needed?  This photo, http://amanadryer.shutterfly.com/25#26 shows a cardboard and or felt remnant on one of the bracket guides.  I can't find those in the parts list.

Thanks again for the help!

You just don't want to have a flat spot on the top side of the roller shafts. If you do, rotate the shaft 180 degrees so the flat is on the bottom as the bottom of the shaft bears no weight. Clean the shafts with plumbers or emery cloth and wipe them off with a rag. Your rollers them selves may not be bad. If they have a lot of play or when you spin them on the shaft you can tell they are no longer round you should replace them. (replace both, not just 1).

The idler pulley snap ring should be the same as the rollers.

Thanks for those links. Don't know why I could not find those parts in the list.

The rollers may not be worn out, but cost so little that I think I will just do them anyway. The only thing I noticed, I mentioned above and that is that one of them spins pretty freely, the other is quite stiff. I'll make sure any flat spot on a shaft is to the bottom when I re-assemble.

So there are no tricks to putting the belt back on the drum? Of all this, that seems to be what might be most difficult.

Well I ordered the parts last Sunday, they arrived Friday, I installed them today. The dryer is humming like a fine tuned... well dryer, I guess. The only thing I was not sure of because I did not pay attention when removing it, was which side of the belt goes against the drum. I hope I got is right.

Thanks again for the help. Even though I am not a big fan of human/dolphin intimacy, I did make a contribution.

Thanks much, the ribbed side of the belt goes against the drum. If you got if wrong you will know in a couple of loads because the belt will burn in two. Might want to have a peek to confirm.

Yep - That's how I installed it thinking that side had more grip and the grooves might be designed to dissipate heat. Thanks again. I'll be back the next time something breaks. Actually now that I think about it we have been ignoring a minor problem with our frig door icemaker. I'll start another thread to see if that is something worth fixing.
