Next update... I've got the thing outside and reassembled with what's now become little more than a new wax motor. As I plugged it back in I got an error code 43- replace board. I then put it through the diagnostic test and it performed all functions- including a major flow in the drain mode- way better than it had done previously. After the diagnostic test I did the error test again- & got NO ERRORS. Now my issue is getting the moldy gasket to reseal at the bottom of the tub- so I've now got a leak. I went through the tub side of the gasket to get at the wax motor. Advise?

Got the gasket out- needed to be cleaned something fierce. Noticed the spring attaching the gasket to the plastic ring to keep the gasket on yet allow the tub to move freely. Now looking for a method to get the spring out. Maybe a stubby screwdriver to get in there and pry it over the edge. Am learning as I go... I'm hoping after almost a week of as much cleaning as fixing- all won't be in vain!

yep, that will work. Just be careful not to puncture the bellows

After all the sweat, blood and tears- it was indeed the wax motor in the door. However- this little journey has gotten me quite familiar with the Kenmore Model 417 front loader and have a scar to prove it. Couldn't be more pleased for all the help and support. Ended up taking apart way more than I needed to, but got the thing cleaned up and she's purring like a kitten. Thanks to the Samauri Nation for the encouraging words. Am sure I ended up spending more than the machine costs new in my time, but was worth it to be able to trouble shoot it next time. Thanks again!
