Read in the FAQ to check the dogs. They look like new, and work by hand if I turn it slowly or real fast. Pulled the agitator and the splines look good. Turn the shaft by hand, it offers little resistance. Tub won't turn by hand and it won't turn without force, then the belt slips. BTW: tightened the belt last night, seems I could tighten it more. It's in an awkward position, so I didn't get it super tight. Bad coupler? Can this be inspected or observed in operation to confirm? I think I need to get it pulled out better and look at it and tighten the belt more. How tight is tight on the belt? 1/2" deflection? What else should I look at or test? Any tips? Tag on the tub says: 82380100 10 60 120 23801 c50808083 25+ years old I guess. Please help and TIA! jon

Is this a stack unit??? If so I have never seen a belt driven stack. Anyways belt should have an inch to inch and a half deflection. So you problem is it won't wash? Check the old wigwag out. From the back the wash coil is the right one..has a yellow and white wire. Wire could be broken or coil could be open. The metal pin for the plunger could also be broken where it goes through the cam bar.

Thanks for your quick response! It is not a stack unit. Top loader. Got it pulled out better and I see greasy oily mess on top of part of the gear box It washes, agitates, but makes a popping noise, sounded like from top. Seems like it does not agitate as fast, and if has a load, the popping starts. It does not pop, and appears to run normally if empty. The agitator dogs look very new. I thought that would be it. I can't see anything worn or broken in the top plastic parts. Belt is about 3/4" deflection. I'm off to check your suggestions and will be back.

If that looks good then you have a bad transmission

Oily goo looks like what you get when your differential is leaking and you drive your Willy's through a river. Emulsified oil. Coil .555K, didn't see any pins broken. How to get the tranny out? flip it on it's side and start pulling stuff out? I might try to fix it, I can make gears, bushings, etc.

Meant to say coil is 555 ohms, presumably good.

take out the agitator, and yep pull the tranny bolts, remove the pump and belt(make sur you know how the belt goes back on at the bottom) the bottom tranny bolt has a spacer that will fall out. right on top of the tranny there is a plastic sleeve, underneath the sleeve there is a bal bearing that will also fall out...you dont want to lose it.

The most likely problem is the spring that holds the agitate drive gear and holds the seal against the top of the transmission has collapsed . When the spring collapses or breaks there isn't enough pressure to keep the agitate gear engaged when it has a load in it and the pop is probably the gears sliding over each other as it slips.

I appreciate the help, you guyzzzzzz. I got it on it's belly, pump out, all the bolts out of the tranny, belt loose. Tranny moves around if I try to spin it, but not coming out just pulling. Feels like a big "C" clip on the other site or something. But you know what? Being a beeeeg dummy, I didn't look after pulling the agitator. I'd just flip it over and look, but working alone, bad back yada yada... Of course I'll have to flip it back if you tell me there is a "C" clip or something in the tub, but I'm hoping you'll say pull harder. I see four springs between the tranny and tub, about 1/2" dia. x 2" longish, look like new and not collapsed. Hopefully there is another spring that is collapsed so I don't need to rebuild the whole gearbox. So, do I need to flip it back and have a look, or just give it a bigger tug? TIA and thanks for the help so far! jon

no clip..you did take the agitator out right? it's most likely just stuck...i have had some that just wouldn't come out with out destroying them. your back may be a lot worse after your done with this one. Usually if i got one that was really stuck i'd grab that sucker with a death grip using my feet to push and and push and pull and jerk the living %&#$ out of it. Normally it would eventually come out. sometimes i would have to get it started by using a piece of 2 x 4 on the end of the tranny shaft for protection and beat it with a hammer(don't try this with the newer direct drive models ).

Thanks a bunch... Agitator is out. I just didn't want to force it. Old, old belt drive. I'll try tapping it out. I'm uber careful with my back. It's a little stiff today, but not injured, so so far so good

Oh, is that spring Willie is talking about inside the tranny, or above it on the shaft?

I got it beat about 3 or 4 inches out. Does this setscrew have to come out?![]() Dang, it's tight! Maybe locktighted, or just very tight. Got it a half turn out with channel locks on the hex key. Still feels tight, didn't break free like typical.

no, you don't take that out....the spring Willie was refering to is inside the gear case itself (the assembly with the nasty looking shaft....man that thing looks pretty rough.

Yup, bad spring. Any chance of finding another? I have a close one, but I'll have to make a bushing so it won't damage the seal. The original has a seat built into it to protect the seal. Emulsified oil inside, and not much of it. Dang, big gears in there. Some bigger than in the tranny of my old Willys Jeep!

you would have to find one at a spring specialty store probably..no original parts are available..you may get lucky at a hardware store that has a similar compression strength.. post a picture of the spring

Any idea what kind of oil to use? Gear oil I guess. Pretty simple transmission:![]() The oil around it is all that was left. Not much under the washer either. With no fill plug, I guess they don't hold much. ![]()

About 1-1/4" diameter and maybe 2" long. The one I have is similar wire thickness and 1-1/2" x 2", so it just might work. There is also a spring under the pawl that should probably be replaced, but I haven't got that out yet. I have more springs of that size, so I can probably find a suitable one.
