I have a Kenmore/Whirlpool 110 20842 990 that will not agitate. It tries very hard but makes low grinding noise. I have checked the coupler and it looks new. The motor works because I can get it to drain fine.

The agitator does not spin freely from the topside, so that's good.

Should I pull the transmission out and see if there is anything broken? I have also been looking onine for a repair manual (free) and can't find one.

Thanks---ED

Is the agitator a single piece or a 2 piece?

So, perhaps the lower part of the agitator is moving back and forth, but the top spiral is just slipping ?
