Have a 12 year old frigidaire washer model 417.3901289 that is making funny sounds when I manually spin the drum. Kind of a clicking sound or plastic on plastic grinding. Can't tell for sure. As far as I can tell, the machine doesn' t make any funny noises when running. Is there anything preventative that I should do to address the problem? Or wait for it to stop working and then either repair or replace the machine? Thanks in advance!!!

ask the wife if she is missing any underwires from her bras the one easy place you can look is inside the tub to pump boot remove the front bottom access panel and remove the big black springy hose off the tub and have a peek inside it post back the other possibility is the tub itself is lettin loose, you dont want to wait for this to break as it can wear a hole through the other tub and cause the machine to flood your home

No missing wires reported. Took off the boot and didn't see anything. Could see the bottom part of the tub and the entire drum as it spun. I have a flex borescope. Couldn't see the back or top though. The sound really doesn't sound like bearings ready to fail and can't tell exactly where it is coming from. Last edited on Mon Apr 19th, 2010 01:17 am by brk |

I don't think this does it justice, but this is one rotation of the drum w/ the recorder in the bottom part. http://flickr.com/gp/kfam/dg6e06 I can't vary the sound by pushing/pulling the inside drum differently. And the inside drum doesn't seam loose. And if I pay attention, I do hear it in a spin cycle as well.

have you checked the pulley on the back of the drum? remove the back and make sure you cant wiggle that pulley that doesn't sound like a good noise, sounds like you are spinning the drum with a golf ball inside the machine

Took off the back this morning. There is no slop or wiggle in the pully. Do I just let it go until it stops? Or try to disassemble furthur? Looks like the next dissambly step is much more difficult - would have to take the tub assembly out. For some reason i cant hear the noise on my computer...anyways, try tightening the pulley even if it doesnt wiggle..I mean bear down on it.If that doesn't do it then yeah your probably looking at a new rear half of tub and also change the gasket...pick ya up a 6 pack too...you'll be needing it.

Thanks!!! Not sure if it is worth $230 + beer for a 12 yr old machine? Perhaps better off donating a beer to someone else and getting a new machine? The tub is stainless and all else seams like it is in good shape. Are there other expensive parts that are likely to fail in a machine this age?

I looked at the parts list and most parts aren't too high. And, I do like beer. Is there anything I need to know before attempting this operation? Of course, unplug it first

you remove the whole assembly by removing everything from the tub assembly except the springs, then laying the machine on its back you then disengage the springs and lift the cabinet off the front boot is glued on, take your time cutting the glue free, make sure you have a tube of crazy glue to reattach this boot to the front panel btw, on a machine of this age the drum vane on the drum seam should have a large inspection hole, you might want to remove this vane and get your head in there with a flashlight and look around inside the other tub before you dismantle everything also, you get the noise by rotating the drum by hand, try this again with the belt off the pulley, this will isolate the drum, on the off chance the motor is making the noise(but i doubt your motor is making the noise i heard in your post) Last edited on Wed Apr 21st, 2010 04:47 am by BrntToast ____________________ The only stupid question is the one not asked hope i've been helpfull, if you wish to buy Brnt beer kick here http://brnttoast.googlepages.com/home feel free to prvt msg frigidaire questions my way (i dont log in every day) |
