The washer has started to make a loud clanging noise on the spin cycle. This Whirlpool washer is about 5 years old and has always been fairly quiet. Now it pings like a car engine that has no oil. It's almost like it has too heavy of a load and the tub is out of balance. But it does it on every wash even with a small load with t-shirts. Any suggestions?

I would first remove the back panel and see if there is grease splattered behind the big pulley. If that looks good I would have a look at the shocks.

OK... removed back panel. No grease splattered. Everything looked very clean. However, I noticed a small dent in the back panel caused by the large nut holding the pulley on. Not sure if that was where the noise was coming from but it does look suspect. Ran a small load with top and back panels off. There was noise but not what it was like before when it sounded like metal on metal. How can I tell if the shocks are still good?

Run a large load of jeans or towels and see if it changes

OK... I ran the large load of jeans and it is still noisy. I can see a tiny bit of oil coming from the shocks. Does this mean the shocks are bad?

Sounds like bad shocks. Here they be. And make sure the suspension springs are in place.

I'm getting ready to purchase the shocks. Before I do, I want to make sure they are something that I can install myself. I'd like to know how hard these are to install. Are there any tricks that I need to know about that would simplify installation? The suspension springs are in place. Do these need to be removed for installation of the shocks? Thanks.

STOP! Before you replace the shocks, take the large pulley in the back of the machine that the drive belt rides on and pull on it. If it is loose,or has any play in it, you have bigger problems with the inner wash basket that holds the clothes. If it's loose, the inner basket is starting to break away from the welds that attaches it to the trunion. There is a lifetime (part only coverage) warranty on this part. You will have to call A&E Factory Service at 1-800-905-9505. You will have to pay the labor, but the part is covered. You may also call the store where you bought the machine from if the are a Whirlpool authorized servicer. Secondly, make sure you are using only HE (High Efficiency) detergent in your machine. Useage of NON-HE detergents is what makes the welds break and causes damage to the outer tub bearing and seal. Thirdly, those shocks are lubricated with grease on the outside of them. They may not be leaking oil, you might be noticing the normal grease on the outside. Please post back your findings on the pulley in the back of the machine if it's loose or there is any play in it.

Thank You, NCSU Laundry Tech. The shocks will only cause an off balance load condition if they are physically broken from the outer tub. They usually get broken from moving the washer without reinstalling the shipping bolts to prevent the outer tub from moving in transit.

OK Scott. Just took the back panel off and tugged on the big pulley. No play or wiggle, it was on very firm. Took a picture of the pulley and shocks. I felt the shocks and there was grease on them as it felt tacky to the touch. Not slick as if it were oil. It seems like there is a lot of play in the tub going front to back and vice versa. Up and down the tub feels more firm. I don't know how else to describe it. The tub spins so fast in the spin cycle that it shakes front to back as it has put a small indentation in the back panel caused by the large pulley nut. We have only used HE detergent in the washer and bought it new so that is not an issue. Here are a few pictures. I'm going to try and post a video of the spin cycle so you can hear the noise. ![]() ![]() ![]()

Check to make sure all the concrete counterweights are tight and that none of the bolts are loose, also.

Checked the concrete counter weights as well as the bolts and everything is tight. The washer vibrates violently on the spin cycle. Not sure if the springs have lost tension. The washer works fine except it has now gotten a lot noisier. I am confused.

Is the machine on a weak floor, the second floor or on a pedestal? Is the machine level?

It's sitting on a tiled concrete slab one story house. I checked for level and it was a tiny bit off. I leveled everything up and just popped in another load of laundry. I will see how this load does. I was reading somewhere and they were talking about the "Bellows" needs to be replaced. What is the bellows? Anyway, I'll post after this next load is done. Thanks for your help!

OK.... What is the next step in replacing the rear tub and basket.? How much is the part or parts and how hard is it to install? Is this something a DIY'er can do or do I need to call in a pro?
