Greetings o reverend ones,
The mighty Kenmore 80 series (circa nineteen eighty something) has done what I suppose is expected at this age but nonetheless frustrating.
The tub is full of water and the motor will hummmmm (loudly) until it just shuts off.  I think it's tripping an internal breaker.  No agitation, no spin, no drain.  I can rotate the agitator in both directions without much resistance.
I did get it to start agitating a couple of times, but it seemed to be fighting against increasing resistance and just stopped and went into hummmmm mode.  Another time, it finished the wash cycle and just sat there (silently) doing nothing when it was supposed to be draining the tub.
I've read up here and realize that this may be timer, clutch, motor, coupler, capacitor and any number of other things.  My question is, where do I start?  Is there just a standard set of "rebuild" parts I should get while I'm ripping this thing apart and hopefully putting it back together?  What ohm-meter checking should I be doing and where?

I humbly submit to your greater wisdom,

Mr Ken M Blues

Remove the Pump (Clips, no need to remove Hose Clamps), and try again...

Remove the Motor to see if you can turn it easily, smoothly ..

Try running it with the Motor connected, but removed, (and maybe held between your legs)]

Thank you so much.  OK. tub is drained, cover is off, motor is removed.  Initially it did not turn very freely but it freed up and now spins easily.  Plugged it back in, set it to spin and the motor does nothing.  The coupler actually looks very good.  No wear at all on the white plastic pins and the rubber coupler itself is still very pliable and the holes are not distorted at all.
Spinning the coupler on the transmission side spins the agitator so the transmission does not seem to be bound in any way.

What's next?

Thanks in advance.

Update - Forgot to put the lid switch into the circuit before testing the motor.  Plugged it in, put it in spin cycle and the motor runs like a champ.   Am going to put it back in the machine and run it through without the cover on and see if I can see what's happening.

Put the motor back in, put it into spin and it's back to loud humming.  The tub won't turn.  Tried to help it out and push it with my hand to no avail.  I assume transmission and clutch have to come out next?  Any handy videos that show me how to do that?

No, the transmission and clutch don't need to come out!!!!!!  You have a bad motor, the bushings are most likely shot and when any load is on the motor it won't start, as the rotor will pull into the stator and bind up.

You first clue to this was when you originally pulled the motor and couldn't turn the shaft easily by hand, once you freed it up, with no load it runs.  It probably makes a slight clunking noise if able to run when pulled from machine, (you may not recognize the noise as being a problem if you've never heard one with worn out bushings before).

Pull the motor again and see how much play you have up/down/sideways on the shaft on both ends of the motor.  If you can fell any play at all then the motor is the problem.

Thank you Willie!  It indeed make a slight clunking noise when I was running it au natural.  The shaft does move ever so slightly when wiggled, so it looks like I'm buying a motor.
Will let you know what happens!

Ahhhhhhhh,  new motor came today.  She's installed and running beautifully.  3 loads down, about 5 more to go!  Thank you all so much and enjoy the beer!  This has been a very cool experience.  Not only is she fixed (with new agimutator dogs to boot!) but I've taken her apart and was able to figure out how she worked and was able to inspect all the rest of the wear parts.
Now, if only it were this easy and inexpensive to fix a '98 Range Rover....

Thanks Again.
