After the dead mouse in vent housing in June and the broken start button the same month (rigged with flexible plastic epoxy and still holding *fingers crossed*), my dear, darling dryer has new issue. When I first start the dryer in the morning, it starts making this squealing, "screaming" noise for the first minute or so. Then as it "warms-up", it stops. If I keep the dryer running, or at least a load every couple of hours, the noise won't return. If I let the dryer sit for many hours or overnight, the noise often comes back until it "warms-up" again. It didn't happen every day, just on occasion, but now it seems worse and more frequent. Any ideas? Could I have done something do create this situation when I took the dryer apart to remove aforementioned dead mouse? This summer of issues with only a 2 year-old dryer is getting on my last nerve. Then again, I did own the Washer/Dryer From the Seventh Circle of Hell, Your Friend and Mine, The Calypso - so I guess I should count my lucky stars I don't have to deal with that anymore. Thanks in advance, as always, for your helpful advice! Heather

Probably bad drum rollers or idler. Take the dryer apart and check 'em out. All should spin freely and without chattering. Probably time for the Whirlpool maintenance kit.

i did have one of these where the idler pulley spring was "singing". remove the front panel leaving front bulkhead on, jump the lid switch, and run the dryer. should help to figure out the noise with the front off

Okay - found the problem - this part (http://www.repairclinic.com/SSPartDetail.aspx?s=t-WED6400-%3d%3dd697017c203i1201316&PartID=1201316) was warped and part of it snapped off. Belt came off, stopped spinning altogether. So have new idler pulley that came with kit (http://www.repairclinic.com/SSPartDetail.aspx?PartID=3346&PPStack=1) but don't see how they are interchangeable or how to put this new pulley on.

http://i160.photobucket.com/albums/t200/Zenzoidman/Dryers/threadbelt2.jpg Idler just sets in the slots in the base of the dryer, select the ones that will line the pulley up with the motor pulley, the bases are cut to fit regular and extra capacity dryers.

Okay - ordered idler from repairclinic (see attached pic). Have new belt that came with kit, but it looks the same as the existing belt. Also, am posting pic of what things look like right now (with broken piece of idler missing). Attachment: idler.jpg (Downloaded 16 times)

Attached is picture of the situation with broken idler pulley (not on obviously). Belt is indeed from the kit - do you think it is okay? Attachment: IMG_2770.JPG (Downloaded 16 times)

I do not know, I have not taken one of yours apart....now that kit that you bought might not even have the right belt for your dryer...it sure has the wrong idler assy in it...it looks like the 341241 belt that is in your kit...you need to be sure you got the right belt and idler pulley for your dryer...I believe you do not have the right parts..

341241 belt in the kit.... http://www.repairclinic.com/SSPartDetail.aspx?s=t-341241-%3d%3di529597&PartID=529597 Belt for your model number according to Sears... http://www.repairclinic.com/Appliance-Parts?searchText=8547168&Search=Search%20for%20Parts Does not show the specs for the green backed belt like it does for the 341241..guess will just have to see if they match up or fit...I do not know if they are the same length or width or same groves and ribs...
