Greetings!

Restident has a FL washer, which is not covered by our normal maintenance agreement. Called an outside repairman, he said "Das Boot" , and never came back, despite the promise of the dispatch several times.

So, Wise homeowner came to me, stated problem, and asked if we could help her get the part, and if I could install it as sidework. Directed her to a few sources, and she said she would call when the part came in. Once again, the lifetime membership paid off, in that I got the entire service manual for this machine, and saw how easy it was to do the job. JOY!!!

Well, today is the day. Went there to replace the boot, took off the outer retainer and the first clue was a spot of rust on the band at the 11 O'clock position. Hm. Then, once the outer part was off, the leak was easy to trace. Back to the left side, up to the hinge, then up to the corner of the soap/softener drawer. Blue tracks and powdered soap residue made THAT one easy.

Now... it appears that there is no defect in the drawer itself in materials. I took it out, did a thorough clean and inspect, and found nothing out of order. The homeowner is using the correct soap and softener, and not in excessive amounts. Soap divider in the proper place for liquid..though it starts to leak out under the divider .002 seconds after it is filled...

It appears that the water flow is overwhelming the drain volume of the drawer and overflowing slightly. Or maybe splash is causing severe dripping...unknown as of now. NOT an everytime problem, but may vary with load size? They were convinced that the boot was the answer before 1 hr ago, so they are looking at it in a new light now.

We put a small load in it, and I put a small piece of towel as a 'tattle tale' on the upper door hinge, and shut another in the corner of the s/s drawer where it was obviously leaking from. I will be going over there in about 15 min to see the results, and will get pictures.

I present this humbly before the masters. I will check in from home in a few hours and post pics and results from first test.

Not sure if you have the same problem I had a week ago - customer had washer leaning a little to the front and splash over water coming out at disp. area. Tilted the unit back so any free water would drain into washer. So far so good - no phone call.

Thanks Grey One!

This washer is on a concrete slab, so is probably close to level, though I will check. How far back, or off-level, will the machine tolerate? I may try tilting it to see if it reduces the problem..

The small load done by the homeowner last night produced no leakage, according to the 'tattle tale' cloths, and confirmed by pulling the boot. The homeowner will be keeping a detailed log of load size, cycle used and 'tattle tale' status for the near future. She is delighted that there is a clearly defined problem, and is eager to resolve it.

Is a series of hi-res pics of the washer. 'Source' shows the area that the 'drool' begins, it travlels down the plastic to the hinge, goes in the cabinet, flows down and collects until there is a sufficient quanity to leak out. 'Inside cabinet 1+2' are taken from the inside of the drum with the boot pulled back. 'Outside evidence' shows some that flows past the hinge and collects along the lower edge of the opening.

Shown here is 'source' , where the leak begins. The small cloth on the top is the upper 'tattle tale', it gets slid in next to the drawer after soap and softener are added. We found a way to fit it in that doesnt interfere with the drawer closing properly. Ther is another small one on top of the door hinge, again placed carefully as to not interfere with proper door closure.

Thanks NCSU_laundry_tech!

The tube was my primary suspect after realizing the boot was fine.

I certainly did check it on the initial examination and after the first wash load.

I was unable to get good pics of it,(because I cleaned it on the first trip, before I brought my camera..), but the trail was pretty easy to trace on the inside of the machine, and nothing but undisturbed dust on the inside at other locations. Examining where the tube went into the boot showed slight seepage around the tube end, but not far enough to get outside the boot and flow down. I was very careful to seal it up properly on the re-install.

Little off topic...

I was outside Raleigh in the spring of '08, actually in Apex... Miss the "Backyard BBQ" restaurant, best damn cole slaw I have ever had. Excellent ribs too. Went there every day for lunch after I discovered them. Mmmmmm...ribs.....

OK, I checked and it is at 5122 NC Highway 55 - Durham, North Carolina 27713

Next to the ABC.

I sat right here at this table, enjoyed my meal, and read all the entertaining messages on the walls. Wish I had buisness there again...wonder if they ship...

Right there with you. This is the western NC style I imagine, I call it "normal" BBQ out of ignorance I guess, as the vinegar stuff is uncommon down here where I eat...But hey, I dont want to start a BBQ war, just share the goodness I have found.:sunny:

Dammitt, now I am gonna have to call them to see if I can get some of that slaw shipped...:P

Thank You Grey One!

Was the leak in your customers washer an "every time" event? And do you know the wash load size?

Another possibility I had considered was checking clearances, getting another soap drawer, and fashioning raised sides to limit splash....Just an idea until I can measure, and test further.

First step will be to get the machine to leak on demand, or at least know the conditions that must be met for the leak.

Sorry , I do not remember if it was every load or not, but it could have been as her washer was leaning forward 1/2 a bubble(or real close to that).

Somewhere in my wanderings I read that 1/4 inch is good . Give that a try first I guess.

Ahhh...how quick time flies by...

Problem solved. The homeowner is being a little more careful about soap level when she does big loads...and no more leak.

FYI Y'all....Thanks for the help.:rocker:
