Hello All, My Fisher Paykel GWL-10US has worked wonderfully since Aug. 2001. Recently, however, I noticed a "frictional-type clanging sound" during the spin cycle. I decided to take a look, before anything worse happens. Also NO diagnostic code. My hubbie removed everything necessary to lift the basket off the shaft. We did NOT remove the lid or the top deck. After removing the agitator, noticed quite a bit of hard water, lint, etc. build-up. (The bottom of the basket around the driven spline looked like some type of stone). Yes, we removed the driven spline and screws. At that time we could not lift up the basket. Decided to soak basket in solution of white distilled vinegar and water overnight. Then ran the machine through short agitation, rinse, spin cycle. That awful sound was still there during spin. However, the bottom of the basket look spanking new! We are STILL unable to lift the basket off the shaft! Any advice, suggestions, help would be very much appreciated. I am drowning in dirty laundry. Thanks so much, Alice

According to the Samurai this washer has no transmission. The motor is a dc variety that is connected directly to the shaft. It is supposed to be cutting edge technology. Having never seen one outside of alabama Power company's display sales ( I asked them if I could take it apart and the saleslady declined) I would say the noise is coming from a seal or a bearing or the combination of such. If it works ok then maybe you need to put it all back together and wash some clothes. I will tell you this: ain't nobody i ever checked with knows anything about these machines other than the Sammy guy. He da man. Hello Thank you so very much for your replies. on shaft, which is preventing us to id the source of the initial problem: frictional sound during spin cycle. As I mentioned in my first post, we soaked the basket in white vinegar and rinsed with hot water (which worked sparkingly well for cleaning inside basket) and STILL the basket seems "cemented" on shaft. (Did it clean in tiny space between driven spleen and shaft???)???? Someone in another post mentioned the use of diluted phosphoric acid for a more powerful cleaning of the hard water, lint, etc. build-up. I am not too keen on trying this, since I am unsure on the effect it will have on this machine. (I remember chemistry all too well). Furthermore, I am not so sure my problem (getting basket off shaft) is the "build-up?!?" Thanks to above Alabama-Applianceman and the lovely person who sent me the manuals, I wonder if there is some type of damage to parts 5,6,7: lipseal, bearing, and/or spacer bearing, respectively??? I have no way of telling since these parts appear to be underneath the basket. (I pray the problem is not with the shaft itself...but then who knows). Calling a reputable repairman is not an option at the moment; hence my hope in the posts.... The last two weeks have been taxing, to say the least, I've had to focus on a few more immediate household EM's. To find a solution to our problem(s): 1) friction sound during spin cycle, 2) basket stuck on shaft--therefore, unable to look for source of problem number 1...on this machine (FP GWL-10), ASAP would be extraordinary!!! Our lovely neighbor has been gracious with her washing machine, but I would prefer not to impose much longer. I would be ever so grateful for further advice, thoughts, suggestions...sincerely!!! Again, thank you all...I am so very glad you are here Bless you, Alice

If you remove the tub cover and the impeller from the bottom of the basket, the basket should lift out as thats the "floating basket" design. the impeller should have a cap to remove in the centre and a bolt under the cap. My guess is a nickel or some other intruder has gotten in there.

Hello kdog Thanks for your reply. Are you advising we go underneath the machine and remove part: #11 479188P--KIT PUMP CAP HOOD & IMPELLOR, as shown on parts manual? I'm just confirming... To be more specific, this "frictional sound" does not sound like a small metallic object "clanging" around...it's difficult to describe Thanks for your help...any further advice? Best wishes, Alice

Thanks Ala-Applianceman Any thoughts on how to best access the 3 parts you mentioned? It looks like, according to the parts manual, they are located beneath the basket. Be well, Alice

Hi SamMan Is there an actual service-repair manual (like those for cars) for this machine? If so, I did not receive one along with those sent to me. To date, I have received the following manuals: 1) Smartdrive_GWL10US_Washer_Service.pdf Describes various parts, how machine works, electronics, and diagnostics, including codes...DOES NOT show HOW to REPPLACE a mechanical part like a bearing, or what to do if basket is stuck on shaft, etc. 2) GWL10_Service_Summary.pdf Quick service summary that comes with machine. 3) ecosmart-gwl10-washer-parts.pdf Describes and illustrates parts only. 4) Washer_Smart_Drive_Diagnostics.pdf Manual which describes in detail diagnostic codes and what they mean for several machines including mine, the GWL-10. 5) GWL03 Fisher_Paykel_Washer_Repair_Manual.pdf Very detailed manual of the GWL03, not my machine, however can appreciate is relatively almost same machine...yet, NO information on how to access or replace certain small mechanical moving parts, or again, how to remove a basket which is stuck on shaft. 6) GWL10US_Ecosmart_UC.pdf Detailed User Manual which comes with machine. I am very grateful for these!!! I would love it if there were a more mechanically-oriented service manual...is there one?? If so, would someone kindly send it to me? Thanks again for all your help Alice

We did NOT remove the lid or the top deck.Since you are this far, pull the tub and take a look, when I mentioned "impeller", I was not referring to the pump, but to what you have called the agitator. Isn't the top deck part of "everything necessary to lift the basket", also the tub ring - check here first as the issue might be right before your eyes

Howdee kdog!! YES I have removed: tub ring (AKA neck ring), clip bias spring, all parts relating to and composing of agitator, driven spline and screws. NO, according to the service sheet located inside electronic panel, complete removal of top deck and electronics is not necessary. It is necessary to remove the screws from the top deck so that you can lift it up and off the cabinet (the outside of washer), which allows for complete visualization of tub and basket (and inside of cabinet) and thus removal of basket. This we have done!! According to the manual, I should now be able to easily lift basket off shaft. I cannot! In case you might be wondering, I have read the manual(s) very closely, I am meticulous, detail-oriented, and relatively technically-mechanically-minded. I'm only writing this to hopefully avoid needing to repeat explaining myself or my (or hubbie's) abilities... Thanks for the reminder, though...any other ideas? You can try removing the bolts that secure the driven spline in the basket, which I think you may have already done- if it still won't pull then try rocking the basket by pushing down on the sides of the basket with your weight, first one side of the basket, then the other - hopefully it will break loose. Whatever is causing this to bind will more than likely prove the issue

Well, how about having one person lift upward on the tub, while the other drives lightly on the plastic insert in the bottom of the basket wit, say a short piece of broomstick and a mallet. Something has occured with the "floating splines" and it's becoming evident that you may have to break that off which will mean replacement. Somehow, somewhere, it has to come apart. I have had to chisel many components out of washing machines in the past. Try spraying that area with WD-40 and soaking it for a while, it may aid in loosening the guck Last edited on Sun Jul 19th, 2009 11:30 pm by kdog ____________________ Can Ye spare some 'cutter me brutha ? http://web.me.com/zenzoidman/kdog/ |

Hi kdog, We have already tried to gently tap the bottom with a rubber mallet. The spline driven and the spline drive have been removed, after soaking with the white vinegar, no problem. When we attempted the mallet tapping and gentle rocking/shaking, the basket moved approximately one inch up from the shaft, but that's it. Do you think it might be the lipseal or bearings located just under (as is shown in the illustration in parts manual) the basket (Alabama Appliance man, above, stated a seal or bearing might be the cause of the problem)??? If so, what is the best way to access to those parts? Can it be done from underneath? I have looked at the bottom of the machine and it looks like a major pain in the B-hind to get to the underside of the basket. However, if I can't have visual access, I won't know what the source of the problem is...the problem of the basket being stuck, much less the friction problem. Do you see my dilemma? I have not performed this to an F/P machine, but I did on an Oasis machine, which is basically the same design. There is a shaft and bearings through the tub, and on the machine I worked on, the tub seal had leaked and allowed water to leak through at the time, I could not order these parts alone, and had to replace the whole outer tub. To perform that, you have to remove that large metal housing from the bottom which contain the wound poles of the stator.

How about some pictures of where you are at in tear down. A visual may be necessary to help you. You say the basket lifts up about an inch then stops, (then the floating basket and splines shouldn't be whats holding it up).

Quick UPDATE: Howdy All Just wanted to let kdog and the rest of you know spraying a little bit of WD40, and letting it soak in a few days, around the shaft inside basket (after removing driven spline) did the trick!!! YAY!!! THE BASKET IS OUT!!! I'll continue to take some pics...will post later Now to figure out what is causing that frictional sound...there is no obvious object that is obstructive in tub. Will be back...need to remove some "gunk," and do some cleaning, check seal & bearings, etc. Thanks so much to all of you...(I sense a solution around the corner...woohoo).

when removing a stuck inner bowl do not take out the screws of the bowl first do a hot high wash with soak with a cup full of epson salts then remove the agitator and see if the bowl will come out if it still wont, refit the wingnut from the agitator , put your foot on top of the wing nut to keep the outer bowl down , and pull the bowl up firmly
