My washing machine knocks loudly during the rinse cycle if the load is even slightly unbalanced. It will then totally stop. A burning smell accompanies this. Once, the washer sits for a few minutes, like maybe it's cooling off, I can start it back up. It seems this problem is getting progressively worse.

Is this an electrical smell??? Wondering if this could be your motor bearings. A worn drive block that the spin basket sits on could cause this noise, but do not see how this could cause a burning smell. See if it is coming from the area of the bottom of the washer or right under the agitator.

One more thing. When the knocking starts, the basket has a tough time starting to spin. Once you adjust the load it goes fine.

You could have a worn drive block making the noise, letting the spin basket jam on the tub which could make the motor over heat, I suppose. Does the spim basket seem like it is loose in the middle?? The whole insides of the washer will move around freely, but the spin basket should not feel loose by itself.
