******WASHER IS WHIRLPOOL LA9200W****** Hi guys, It's me again - AZ Repair Gal. With help from this forum, over the years I've made several repairs to my 19-year old washer and dryer pair. Unfortunately, I think the problem with my old Whirlpool washer this time is a tad more serious than just worn out dawgs or faulty lid switch ... Hubby noticed that the water did not drain completely on the last load today. I restarted the washer and stood by to watch. More water filled in, as it should, and the washer then started to agitate... seemingly under protest. I heard a faint, unfamiliar sound that I never heard the washer make before. I moved it over to spin cycle and it started to spin - but with a furious loud knocking sound, like someone was whacking it with a hammer. Then it abruptly stopped spinning, hummed for a couple of seconds, and shut off. I punched the button off, back on, moved it around to another cycle, put it on spin cycle again, etc. -- seemed DOA. About a half hour later I pulled the button on and it started to spin (and knock) again, followed by the hum and shut-off. The water looked like it wanted to drain, and the drain hose was moving around in time with the knocking, but the water is still in the washer. My lay opinion is that whatever is happening in there is causing the washer to overheat and shut off. There's a washer at Costco that looks a lot like this one for $389, but if possible I would still like to keep this old girl going. My records show the washer as LE9200H and the dryer as LA9200W. And yes, the washer at Costco is a Whirlpool but when I saw it I didn't make a note of the model # (didn't know I had an issue at that point).

I'd like to fix this washer if I can. But if that is beyond my capacity or turns out to be cost prohibitive, I definitely will solicit advice from experts in this forum for its replacement. A few years ago I bought a new w/d set and gave my old ones away to a friend. Within 2 days I sent the new ones back, gladly paying the 10% restocking fee, and was extremely grateful that I was able to retrieve my originals... But back to the issue at hand. Now that we know the correct model # (sorry about the misdirection), what do you think I'm looking at here?

If your machine is a Whirlpool less than 20 years old, it's a direct drive model. The symtoms you describe point to transmission failure. It's not a bad job for us professionals, I'm not sure if you would enjoy doing the repair yourself.

a direct drive tranny job is very easy especially for a pro, we can do one in 20 to 30 minutes easy. a non-pro may do this job in under an hour especially if you have a spanner wrench(which is a special tool just for this washer. the first thing i would check is the drive block that is located under the inner basket and this is where the spanner wrench is needed. the drive block could have went bad and is causing the knocking noise and may even be allowing the transmission to bind up. very brief description of the tranny job...take off shell, take off pump and the motor, take off agitator, remove spanner nut....tilt machine back against a wall, 45 degrees ish. remove three bolts holding in the transmision and it should fall right out. there are a few more steps but this should give you an idea of what is in volved enjoy

Thanks. This has been a very reliable appliance and I would like to give it a try, but bummer... it's a holiday weekend so I'll have to wait a couple of days before I can get started. Re: the spanner wrench - I never have a problem investing in tools. Will appliance parts stores carry these?

indeed they will... but you dont need to remove the spanner nut if all your doing is the transmission.... you only need this tool if you are going to pull the basket or remove the basket drive... idk about binding due to the block drive but it is possible if something was stuck between the outer tub and basket it would strip that block/bind the tranny... take the shell off, remove the tub cover and take a look along the sides...

Ok, finally got past taxes (and a family funeral) and have the cabinet off. This is the first time I've looked underneath the tub so please let me know if this is off-base, but I see a black belt under the drum/basket that is very loose and appears to be twisted.... I can't find it on the exploded diagram and am not sure what it is... Could this in any way be related to the tranny seizing up? We have about 2 hours before repair shops close here in Phx. Anyone online that can help? I'm not sure what I'm supposed to look for or do next.

Thanks for the diagrams - these are extremely helpful. That foam strip does not look to be glued to anything any more... but given its purpose I'm not going to worry about it right now. The motor runs... it agitates but then quits after about a minute. If I let it sit for a while and manually twist the knob to spin cycle, it spins (with loud knocking sound) then quits - again, after about a minute. If I let it sit a while longer and manually advance the cycle, it will then drain. So I'm pretty sure the pump is ok. Something is heating up that shouldn't. When the motor cools down after a rest, it tries to run. So, I'm ruling out the pump and lid switch. Does what I described still sounds like it could be the coupler? If so, I'll take it apart and take a look. p.s. - appliance parts store is open tomorrow a.m. so I'm no longer in a panic about not being able to get the parts I need.

Whirlpool washers use the Coupler, not this Maytag model ... remove the Belt and check to see if you can turn the Motor easily, smoothly ... then with the Belt still removed, run the washer to see how long the Motor will run ...
