The fan is all right grey one, it still has its D profile just like the shaft. And it's tight on there, so any rotation of the shaft, the fan rotates too, as it's supposed to. Only problem, for some reason the fan moves along the length of the shaft, it's fine when it's back closest to the motor, but when it is at the end of the shaft, it hits the housing, and shrieks. This is so frustrating, I replaced the motor and coil, bloody thing runs, now I cannot figure out a way to keep the fan in place aside from taking the whole thing apart, drilling a hole into the shaft and inserting a cotter pin, which would be a huge pita. Anybody know what I can do? Epoxy the fan to the shaft maybe, lol. Thanks.

Don't know if you can tweek the hardware or not. If tight and proper it should stay there until the cow comes home with a bull on her back..

Grey one, you mean the two pieces that attach around the fan with the screw, if tightened properly, keep the fan tight on the shaft? I tightened the screw as much as I can. According to the pic I posted, did I attach them correctly? Is there another piece I'm missing or is just these two? I'm at a loss.

Those two clips and that screw are the only things that hold that blower wheel in place, be sure that prong is in place and the top of the clips have the flats and are not rounded, if the flats are there you do not have the clips attached right, they can be installed backwards...

Thanks Pegi, grey one. I guess from the pic I attached of the two pieces screwed together (off the shaft) it's unclear whether I did it correctly. Fairly certain I reproduced the attachment on the shaft on this pic. OK, I'll try other configs on the old motor and 'spare' blower. Reassured that these are the only pieces required. Still would hate to have to remove the drum to get inside the motor assy. Oh well, if I have to I have to. Should have tested the motor and fan before putting the drum on. Lesson learned, among others. I can write a whole FAQ on this project. ; )

From looking at the picture of your clamps, it appears that the blower wheel has spun on the shaft and rounded out the flats on the clamps. Here's what the clamp should look like, (I just see rounded holes in yours without the flats):  GE part# WE1X688 http://www.repairclinic.com/referral.asp?R=154&N=2417

Thanks Budget. The pic I uploaded was actually the spare pair I had from the motor assy I bought. Good news, the machine is working. Grey one and Pegi were spot on, the clamps were not tight. I made the rookie error of not tightening them prior to attaching the entire blower assy to the machine. This left me very little leverage in the small opening in the front to tighten the clamp properly. I took everything apart last night, tightened the clamps and it did not move a hair. Reassembled, dutifully lost the retaining ring for the drum bearing in the back of the machine lol, had to wait till today to buy a new one from the hardware store, popped it in, reattached everything else, ran a test run, smooth. To all of you, thank you so much for all your help. You have been great. Some lessons learned I'm taking away from this: 1. detach the drum as an assy from the bearing in the back access panel, NOT unscrew the three screws inside the drum which keeps the drum, hubcap piece, and bearing all together. 2. tighten everything as much as you can and test, before putting it all back together. 3. keep coming to fixitnow for help (although this is not really a lesson learned here, I knew this all along, it's now 3 different appliances repaired thanks to the forum, dishwasher chopper assy, fridge heater terminator, now dryer). Cheers to all, and happy St. Patrick's Day! (I need a few drinks now)
